GOLF PLAYOFFS AT UNLV Aggies go 3-1; claim the Silver tournament title
Las Vegas Arbor View won three of four games last week, to claim the Southern Nevada American Legion baseball Silver Division playoff championship at Koerwitz Field on the Faith Lutheran High School campus. In the double-elimination tournament, the Aggies defeated Las Vegas Calvary Chapel 12-2 and Rancho 8-7, then lost 7-3 to Del Sol to set up a showdown game against the Dragons for the title. Arbor View won 7-2 to earn it. In earlier games, Rancho defeated Del Sol 5-4, which then ousted Calvary Chapel 5-4 and Rancho 18-8. The top four teams from the Silver Division qualified for the playoffs. Pahrump Valley Post 40 finished ninth with an 11-13 record in its inaugural season in Legion baseball. Arbor View didn't have any luck in the Mid-States regionals played last weekend in Chanute, Kansas. The Nevada team lost 13-2 to Missouri and 18-10 to Oklahoma to fall out of the tournament. The Nevada State American Legion Baseball tournament is being played through Saturday at Wilson Stadium on the UNLV campus. Today at 5 p.m., Henderson Coronado will play Henderson Green Valley, and at 8, the Bishop Gorman-Silverado winner will face the loser of Tuesday's contest between Reno and Durango. On Thursday, a winners' bracket game starts at 5 p.m.; at 8, Sierra Vista will take on the Coronado-Green Valley winner. Friday's matchups are if-necessary games at times to be announced. On Saturday will be the championship game at 7:30 p.m. In earlier results, it was Green Valley 12, Coronado 9; Sierra Vista 2, Palo Verde 1; Reno 13, Bishop Gorman 2; Durango 10, Silverado 7; Coronado 22, Palo Verde 7, and Sierra Vista 11, Green Valley 1. The Nevada champion advances to the Western regionals, to be played Aug. 10-14 at Isotope Park and Lobo Field in Albuquerque, N.M. Nevada will play the New Mexico champion at 10 a.m. Aug. 10 at Isotope Park in a first-round game. Also in the tournament are Utah, California, Arizona, the New Mexico host team, Colorado and Hawaii. Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Hanford Post 5 will host the American Legion World Series Aug. 18-22. It is a double-elimination tournament to be played at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids. Doubleheaders begin at 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each of the first three days to reduce the field to three teams, which then compete for the World Series title. |
