Family Resource Center sign-ups

The Pahrump Family Resource Center, a program of No to Abuse, will be accepting sign-ups for low and no income families in Pahrump, Beatty and Amargosa for free school supplies at specific times on certain dates until Aug. 15 at its new location on 621 S. Blagg Road (between Wilson Road and Highway 372).

Televised political forum Friday

All candidates for Nye County political offices are invited to participate in a free, live Television Political Forum from 6-8 p.m. Friday on Channel 30, KPVT.

Candidates are asked to prepare a statement of their candidacy not to exceed three minutes. Each candidate will present their statement on camera.

Minuteman Civil Defense Corps

The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps is forming a chapter in Pahrump and the Las Vegas area.

Fall film festival

The Pahrump Arts Council is inviting everyone and anyone to submit a short film (not to exceed 40 minutes) for The High Desert Shorts International Film Festival to be held this September.

The categories are: Drama, Documentary, Animation, Comedy, Family, Sci-fi, Action and Adventure.

The film festival is being sponsored by The Nugget, The Pahrump Arts Council, Linda Kiss of Channel 41, The Pahrump Chamber of Commerce and The Nevada State Arts Council.

MS ice cream social

Lois Layne's Deli (formerly all-American Deli) will hold a PVMS Connection ice cream social for multiple sclerosis from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 6 on the corner of Basin and Dahlia, across from Petrack Park.

All proceeds will go to the establishment's local support group.

Miss Pahrump pageant

Tickets are now on sale for the Miss Pahrump 30th Anniversary Pageant being held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Saddle West.

Sheriff's office closed Tuesdays, Thursdays

The Nye County Sheriff's Office's records/front office division will be closed from 1-4 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday until further notice.

However, dispatch may be reached at 751-7000 during the office closure if a deputy's assistance is needed.

Computer user group

The Pahrump Computer User Group will meet at 1 p.m. Monday at the Pahrump Moose Lodge meeting room.

Bill Barney, of Community Dish, will present information about Internet access systems. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Rotary Club candidate night

The Pahrump Valley Rotary Club will host a candidate night from 6-10 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Saddle West.

One woman art show at library

The work of artist Beverly Sivils will be displayed in a multi-media, open gallery show, which will run through Aug. 11 at the library, 701 East St.

Rosemary Clarke school enrollment

The Rosemary Clarke Middle School office will re-open Aug. 14. The school will be available for enrollment for new students who were not enrolled on the last day of the 2005-2006 school year in a Nye County School.

Enrollment for sixth graders will be Aug. 15, seventh graders on Aug. 16, and eighth graders on Aug. 17. The time to enroll will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. all three days.

A parent orientation will be held in the Rosemary Clarke Middle School gym Aug. 24.

The first day of school for students will be Aug. 28. Rosemary Clarke school hours are from 7:10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Schedules will be handed out during first period.

United Way Hawaiian luau

Bring your family and your chairs to The United Way of Pioneer Territory-sponsored Hawaiian luau from 6-10 p.m. Aug. 19 at Honeysuckle Park.

Traditional Hawaiian fare will served. Meals will be $10 per adult plate, $6 for children 12 and under and $2 hotdogs will be available for the children.

United Way is also soliciting business sponsors to help defray the cost of food and entertainment. One hundred percent of the profits go to local United Way's special grants fund. Cancer Society's Relay For Life event

The American Cancer Society invites people who want to honor cancer survivors, caregivers or pay tribute to those who have lost their battle with cancer to join their Relay For Life event, starting at 6 p.m. Aug. 19 and ending at 6 a.m. Aug. 20 at Petrack Park.

Summer teen night at the pool Aug. 22

St. Martin's in the Desert Episcopal Church, in partnership with the Nye Communities Coalition and the Pahrump Town Pool, is hosting a free Teen Night at the Pahrump Town Pool from 7-9 p.m. Aug. 22.

It is open to teens, ages 13 through 18 and ID is required.

Pahrump Valley High School will hold freshman orientation from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 24 at the Ninth Grade Academy gym.

Hospice camp for children

Nathan Adelson Hospice presents Camp Mariposa Washoshe, for children ages 6-12 who have experienced the death of a close friend or loved one.

The camp will be held Aug. 25-27 at Camp Lee Canyon at Mt. Charleston. Space is limited to 50 children from Pahrump and Las Vegas.

Youth issues workshop Aug. 12

The Nye Communities Coalition, in partnership with St. Martin's Episcopal Church, invites the community to a free workshop, "Asset Building with Youth: In Faith-Based Communities," from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Pahrump Community Library, 701 East St.

Participants will gain an understanding of youth issues and risks and what communities can do to create safe and supportive environments for youth.

The workshop will be facilitated by Loyd Platson, NCC Task Force coordinator and substance abuse prevention specialist.

Public invited to help with new art center

The public is encouraged to help shape the direction of a new art center project for Southern Nevada in the first of two community architectural design meetings to be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Beatty Community Center. A second meeting is planned for Las Vegas in September.

Goldwell Open Air Museum was recently awarded a $7,544 Design Arts and a $21,065 Challenge grant from the Nevada Arts Council to initiate a master planning process for the 15-acre property it cares for near the ghost town of Rhyolite and for the development of an "artist community" facility.

Individuals interested in attending the Beatty design meeting are asked to RSVP by calling 702-870-9946 by Saturday.

Back to school rummage sale

The Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church will hold a giant back to school rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 1300 East Highway 372.

A lot of good clothing, used furniture and appliances will be for sale. Lunch and pastries will also be available.
