OFF-ROAD RACE

Flat tire doesn't stymie Herder

By DON McDERMOTT
PVT

HORACE LANGFORD JR. / PVT
The Jimco driven by John Herder goes off the course on the next-to-last turn on the 242.9-mile course for the Terrible's Town 250 Off-Road Race, contested Saturday. Herder won the race, despite a flat tire having to be changed with 10 miles left.

Just 10 miles from the finish, the right rear tire on the Jimco driven by John Herder blew apart. To say the 37-year-old driver from Tucson, Ariz., was concerned ...

"I am not much on changing tires, and this time ... well, the car fell off the jack and there are some other problems; it took me 10 minutes to change the darned thing," said Herder. "And for it to happen just 10 miles from the finish was tough."

Herder, who did the race solo, changed the tire, climbed back into his "little ol' dune buggy" and roared back down the course to win the Terrible's Town 250 Off-Road Race overall title in 4 hours, 1 minute, 29 seconds.

"At one point, I was at least 15 minutes ahead of everybody; I started first and I didn't have to contend with dust or anything else," said Herder, who was headed for a remarkable sub-four-hour drive in the 242.9-mile race, which started at Johnnie, turned at Beatty, and finished a hundred yards from the Terrible's Town Casino in Pahrump.

His margin of victory was just 52 seconds over the Herman Motorsports vehicle co-driven by Damen Jefferies and Casey Jefferies of Oak Hills, Claif. Their time was 4:02:21, which put them 58 seconds ahead of a Ford truck, which included the Arizona quartet of Garron Cadiente, Chris Godfrey, Ron Whitton and Rick Geiser.

Completing the top five - and finishing within four minutes of the winner - were two Jimcos. Fourth in 4:04:03 were Ronny Wilson, Randy Wilson, Charles Gioffredi, and Randy Beck, all from California, and fifth in 4:05:01 were Kory Scheeler, Larry Job, Mike Costello, and James Wischmeyer, all from Las Vegas.

Sixth was a Ford truck, which had a crew that included Ed and Tim Herbst of Las Vegas, and Californians A.J. Martin and Jeremy Johnson. Their time was 4:09:09.

Driving solo and finishing seventh in 4:11:33 was Chuck Hovey of Escondido, Calif.

"I was going to relieve John, but he felt pretty good, so he kept on going," said Steve Melton, a Buckeye, Ariz., resident listed as co-driver for the Herder team.

The Herder team filled the huge trophy that is awarded to the championship team and celebrated, as several hundred of the fans who watched the race gathered around in the Terrible's Town Casino parking lot, on a warm, humid afternoon.

Winning the motorcycle race was the team of Mike Childress and Steve Hengeveld; they completed the race in 4:09:00, more than 39 minutes ahead of the California trio of Jeff Trulove, Chris Ray, and Max Eddy Jr. (4:48:29).

The quad title went to Wayne Matlock and Chad Prull, whose Honda made the tour in 4:54:22 - just 14 seconds ahead of a Roll Design quad co-driven by Doug Eichner and Marc Spaeth.

In the quad ironman division, Todd Hunter of Las Vegas, aboard a Honda, was first in 6:15:59. In the motorcycle ironman competition, Jerry Jones, riding a Yamaha, was first in 5:28:03.
