The long-planned-for site of the Nye County fairgrounds south of Pahrump received a jumpstart of $250,000 for the purchase of water rights that will get the long stalled project going.

"It's been a long time coming and I appreciate your help," said Mike Cosgrove to the Nye County Board of Commissioners Tuesday upon the allocation of the funds to the town of Pahrump for obtaining the water rights.

The holdup on the project has been attributed to delays at the state level in obtaining the water permit, which the town applied for a year ago.

Cosgrove, a member of the fairgrounds board of directors, in the late 1990s was Pahrump's town manager. He worked with Sen. Harry Reid in the latter's efforts to acquire the public land from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management for the Pahrump fairgrounds.

Cosgrove said that with rights to the water, Great Basin Drilling would soon be drilling a well, enabling construction crews to sprinkle the grounds for dust abatement as development of the fields progressed.

Commissioner Patricia Cox's motion was approved with the board's unanimous vote.

Last April, the board of commissioners approved by resolution using up to $1 million of the $6 million it was acquiring through a bank loan, mainly for the renovation of the old Preferred Equities facilities on the Calvada Eye. The funds were for the purpose of obtaining water rights for the fairgrounds and the Calvada Eye property.

Recently the Pahrump Town Board approved the purchase of 25 acre-feet for the project.

Town Manager Dave Richards said the town was now "ready to spend the money."
