'Fat Man' rides his way to healthWARD NEARLY HALF THE MAN HE WAS IN OCTOBER
By MARY BALDASANO
Once he restarted his journey Ward was joined by another rider for a 10-day journey to the Texas/Louisiana border. Along the way, he saw the damage from Katrina up close and personal. Ward said, "The extent of the damage just doesn't come across on television. They only show portions at a time, seeing it all was just overwhelming. It was the topic of conversation at every stop I made, which brought the reality to life." Once he reached Mississippi, he had a wreck and broke his bicycle. He reached the beach at St. Augustine, Fla., on Feb. 18 and found he had lost 107 pounds. Unloading gear from his trailer that he would no longer need, Ward was able to average 60 miles a day, and on one day completed 109 miles towing a 55-pound trailer. The most important goal he reached as a result of the trip was identifying the carbohydrates that were causing his cravings. He found that simple carbs, such as grains and sugar, were his downfall. Not eating them was the key to obtaining the weight loss he so desired. Once this was achieved, Ward was able to learn how to control his dietary urges and learn how to maximize energy and virtually achieve body energy on demand. Said Ward: "I know I can sustain the weight loss and craving control, because I have lost another 12 pounds since I've been home. The development of a new eating philosophy continues to sustain my weight loss." To date, he has lost 119 pounds with a current weight of 278. He hopes to reach his final goal of 245 soon.
