Some 80 Democrats braved the snow and cold to participate in the 2006 Nye County Convention and Candidate's Forum held at the Elks' lodge in Tonopah March 18. The Central Nevada Democratic Caucus hosted the event.

Nye County Democratic Central Committee Chairman Loyal Watkins presided. The first order of business was election of members of the Central Committee for two-year terms.

Watkins was re-elected chairman of the Committee. Jack Wood was elected to the post of first vice chairman. Loyal Scarlett was elected second vice chairman.

Dawn Hardina was elected secretary and Ralph DeFeo was re-elected treasurer. Ernie Bearss was elected to the new position of sergeant at arms.

Following the election the membership discussed and proposed additional planks to the proposed Nye County Democratic Platform. Candidates Forum:

At 1 p.m., a candidate's forum was presented with Central Nevada Democratic Caucus' Judy Yates introducing each candidate to the audience.

Dina Titus, candidate for governor, presented a brief talk outlining her views and plans for the state. Her presentation spurred the rural audience with resounding applause and acceptance by the attending Democrats.

Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson, also candidate for governor, sent a surrogate who read a statement.

Catherine Cortez Masto, seeking the nomination to run for attorney general, outlined her family's long history in Nevada and her primary interests in seeking the post of Nevada's top law enforcement position.

Jill Derby, candidate for the United States House of Representatives, District No. 2, drove all the way from Carson City and presented her case for election. Her presentation was rendered energetically and forcefully.

Kate Marshall, candidate for state treasurer, presented her credentials and reasons for her quest for the nomination.

Geoffrey VanderPal, also a candidate for state treasurer, presented his resume and qualifications for the financial field.

Kim Wallin, candidate for state controller, entertained the audience as she clearly laid out her platform.

Nye County's Harley Kulkin, candidate for Nevada Assembly District 36, set out his reasons for pursuing the role.

Nye County resident and a current member of the Town Board of Pahrump, Laurayne Murray, also a candidate for Nevada Assembly, District 36, told the audience of her background and what she hopes to accomplish for District 36.

Pahrump resident Charlie Anzalone, candidate for Nye County commissioner, District IV, set forth his views of some of the problems his hoped for constituency faces.

Janice Bearss, resident of Pahrump and candidate for Nye County commissioner, District V, explained to the membership who she is and her approach to addressing the issues in Nye County.

Pahrump's Channel 30 On The Spot host Lew Gitlin filmed the candidate's forum. Following the presentation of the candidates a drawing was held for the prizes of the affair, wine, champagne, candlesticks, and a framed chunk of gold ore. Finger food was provided to all in attendance in the lobby, where Nye County Democrats mingled and talked with the candidates while having punch or coffee. All the candidates displayed their campaign brochures on tables in the lobby for people to read.

Gratitude and expressions of appreciation for their efforts in putting together the event was extended to the Central Nevada Democratic Caucus members: Chairman Tony Grimes, Secretary Judy Yates, Treasurer Linda Hansen and Vice Chairwoman Jane Logan. Special thanks must be given to member Elizabeth Zbinden who donated the gold specimen from her collection.
