Jerome Pollock golf tournament

The United Way of Pioneer Territory has announced that their annual golf tournament's name has been changed to "The Jerome Pollock Memorial Golf Tournament," which will be held April 15 at Mountain Falls Golf Course.

The tourney will be a scramble format; check-in will begin at 7 a.m. and the contest will start at 8 a.m. The cost is $60 per player and/or to sponsor a hole. Sign up as an individual or as a team. Math Proficiency Test preparation

A review session will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday in the Pahrump Valley High School cafeteria for any student who will be taking the Math Proficiency Test on March 28.

Those participating will be treated to free pizza while reviewing the four areas of the test: numbers and operations, algebra, geometry and probability and statistics. Drive for the kids

Saitta Trudeau will have minivans and other vehicles available for parents to examine and test-drive, beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday during parent/teacher conferences at Rosemary Clarke Middle School.

Dodge will donate $5 to Rosemary Clarke Middle School for every adult who test-drives a Dodge or Chrysler and completes a short questionnaire. This is to raise money for the school.

New teen program

Register now for WestCare of Nevada's new after-school 'Positive Action' program, which focuses on helping teens with the challenges they face using games and activities.

Wild horse, burro board vacancy

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is requesting public nominations to fill a vacancy on the National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board.

The board advises the BLM and the Forest Service on the management, protection and control of wild horses and burros that roam public lands administered by these agencies.

Advisory board members serve three-year terms, on a staggered term basis. The board meets at least two times a year. Federal and state government employees are not eligible to serve on the board. The individual selected will serve out the remainder of a term that expires July 8, 2008.

Any individual or organization may nominate one or more persons to serve on the advisory board. Individuals may also nominate themselves. Nominations letters and resumes should include each nominee's name, address, phone number, e-mail address, present occupation, explanation of qualifications relevant to representing the public interest, name of the nominee's nominating organization or individual (or an indication that the individual is self-nominated), and a list of endorsements and/or letters of endorsement.

Two scholarships available for seniors

Applications are available in the Pahrump Valley High School guidance office for the following scholarships:

€ The Ron & Charlotte Floyd Business Degree scholarship: Seniors with a 3.5 or better GPA planning to major or minor in business are eligible. Student must provide proof of school or community activities and give a statement of plan for the future. Scholarship award is $5,000.

€ The 2006 Keith Maeder Trust scholarship: Seniors who plan to attend an accredited college, university or trade school are eligible. Scholarship award is $8,000.

Stroke, aneurysm, PAD screenings

The First Southern Baptist Church will be hosting Life Line Screenings, checking neck and leg arteries for stroke and heart disease risk and testing for potential aortic aneurysms, April 6 at 741 E. Fehrs Way.

A complete vascular screening package, including the stroke/carotid artery, abdominal aortic aneurysm and ankle brachial index (hardening of the arteries) is $109; a complete vascular package with an osteoporosis screening is $129. Kiwanis black tie fundraiser

A chance to win a trip to Hawaii for two will also be included. The winners will enjoy a one-week stay in a condo in Kona-Kailua. The package includes coach airfare. Horses benefit trail ride April 29

The second annual Heal The Hearts of Horses Benefit Trail Ride, hosted by Silver State Old West Riding Tours, will be held April 29, on Highway 159 in Spring Mountain Ranch State Park at Red Rock.

Registration is $30 per rider on or before April 11 and $40 per rider from April 12 to the day of the ride. Silver State Old West Riding Tours has a limited number of horses available for lease the day of the ride.

Valley Electric youth seminar

Valley Electric Association is accepting applications from high school sophomores and juniors who live in VEA's service area to attend its 23rd annual Youth Energy Seminar Leadership Program (YES), to be held July 10-15 at Boreal Ridge, Calif.

YES is a gathering of approximately 80 to 90 high school students who are sponsored by their local rural electric cooperatives from Nevada, California and Oregon. One student from the 2006 seminar will be selected to attend a youth energy seminar in Washington D.C. Two other students will be selected to receive cash scholarships. New truck school

Great Basin College, with the main campus located in Elko, will be taking over the Pahrump Valley Center from the Community College of Southern Nevada.

Great Basin College is in the process of implementing a truck school. Both class "A" and class "B" CDLs with a "P" endorsement will be offered. This will allow the ability to drive either a truck or bus.

Six or 11 course credits will be granted, depending on which class of license is earned. The program will allow a student to apply for a Pell Grant or student loan to pay for the course. The class "A" license will cost $3,069.45 if a cash payment is made.

Funding for dental assistance available

The Nye County Health and Human Services currently has limited funding available to provide emergency dental assistance for low-income residents on a first come, first serve basis.

Limited funding is also available for providing fluoride and sealant treatments to qualified second and third grade students.

Notice to all voters registered in the Republican Party

Nevada state law requires each major political party, in every year during which a general election is held, to have a precinct meeting held for each precinct. Those in attendance will elect delegates to your party's county convention at the meeting. Get mugged for a good cause

Businesses can make a $100 tax-deductible donation to Quilts 4 Cancer and their business cards will be printed on between 125 to 150 mugs.

A business gets to keep two mugs and the others will be sold by local Boy Scouts to fulfill their service time. Sale proceeds will benefit Quilts 4 Cancer.

No To Abuse Violence Prevention

No To Abuse, in partnership with the Nevada Coalition Against Sexual Violence, is looking for a Male Mentor for a violence prevention program.

This volunteer position focuses on prevention efforts for males age 12 to 21 by promoting the concept of men taking responsibility with other males to end violence against women. Responsibilities include disseminating Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) materials, coordinating and implementing the MVP curriculum, teaching life skills and more.

Sheriff DeMeo establishes hotline

Sheriff DeMeo has created a 'Citizen's Comments Hotline' to allow citizens an easier way to express their opinions about the performance of the Sheriff's Office (critical or complimentary), as well as about other county matters. Free breast cancer counseling

The Center for Compassionate Care will provide breast cancer counseling over the telephone at no cost to anyone newly diagnosed, in treatment, having a recurrence or in remission. Life partners, family members or friends of anyone with breast cancer can also speak with a trained counselor. The CCC is a non-profit counseling agency that operates under the direction of the Nathan Adelson Group. Call the CCC at 1-866-471-3273.

Prostate cancer chapter starting

A chapter of Us TOO, a nationwide non-profit organization, is forming for Pahrump and Amargosa Valley residents to raise prostate cancer awareness. Caucasian men age 60 or greater and African American and Hispanic men age 50 or greater should be tested every year. The disease can be cured if caught early.

New Leash on Life Pet Adoptions, (formerly Southern Nye County Friends of Animals), is now offering no-cost and low-cost spaying and neutering for pets.

Nye County drug discount card

Nye County is now offering a prescription discount card through a joint effort with the National Association of Counties.

There are no age or income requirements and no limits on how many times the card can be used. One card is good for the entire family and can be used anytime a prescription is not covered by insurance. There is a 20 percent average savings. Enrollment is free for Nye County residents.

New Leash on Life seeking donations

New Leash on Life Pet Adoptions, (formerly Southern Nye County Friends of Animals), is asking all animal lovers in Pahrump for donations to save the lives of animals in the valley.

The non-profit organization rescues dogs and cats and recently acquired land, so donations of building materials such as chain link fencing, cement, electrical labor, storage sheds and funds to build a cattery and care building would be greatly appreciated.

PVHS looking for clerical volunteers

Volunteers to help children needed

The Nye County School District is looking for volunteers to work with children and schools in various capacities, including one-on-one tutoring of students, reading to children, assisting in the schoolyard or helping in the library.

Hospice accepting old car donations

No longer needed or wanted vehicles may be donated to Nathan Adelson Hospice through Volunteers of America to help people in the community.

Donating a vehicle may result in your receiving a greater value for your car as a charitable tax deduction and helps you avoid the hassles, cost and time demands of selling it.

Call Volunteers of America at 1-800-407-2600, say you are making a donation to benefit Nathan Adelson Hospice, and a representative will guide you through the donation process.

Volunteers of America will respond to inquiries within 24 hours; arrange vehicle pickup; process the necessary paperwork; and provide a receipt and the required tax forms.

Burn ban lifted for Nye County

Nye County Emergency Services reminds the community that controlled, open burning is now permissible in Nye County. If you wish to conduct an open, controlled burn, contact the appropriate local agency for information and guidelines prior to any burn.

Contact Pahrump Fire Rescue at 727-5658. In all other Nye County communities, contact the local Nye County Sheriff's Office dispatch.

Pathways seeking math tutors

The Pathways program is looking for tutors, primarily in the area of mathematics. However, those interested in tutoring students in other areas are also needed.

Power wheelchairs

Power (electric) wheelchairs for senior citizens and the permanently disabled are available through the Three Wishes Inc. program at no cost to the recipient if they qualify.

The wheelchairs are provided to those who cannot walk and cannot self-propel a manual wheelchair in their home, and who meet the additional guidelines of the program. No deposit is required.

All Medicare recipients should now be aware that if they suffer from conditions such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disorders, and have difficulty walking or propelling a standard wheelchair, they may be eligible to receive an electric wheelchair paid for by Medicare.
