New truck school

Great Basin College, with the main campus located in Elko, will be taking over the Pahrump Valley Center from the Community College of Southern Nevada.

Great Basin College is in the process of implementing a truck school. Both class "A" and class "B" CDLs with a "P" endorsement will be offered. This will allow the ability to drive either a truck or bus.

Six or 11 course credits will be granted, depending on which class of license is earned. The program will allow a student to apply for a Pell Grant or student loan to pay for the course. The class "A" license will cost $3,069.45 if a cash payment is made.

Get mugged for a good cause

Businesses can make a $100 tax-deductible donation to Quilts 4 Cancer and their business cards will be printed on between 125 to 150 mugs.

A business gets to keep two mugs and the others will be sold by local Boy Scouts to fulfill their service time. Sale proceeds will benefit Quilts 4 Cancer.

No To Abuse Violence Prevention

No To Abuse, in partnership with the Nevada Coalition Against Sexual Violence, is looking for a Male Mentor for a violence prevention program.

This volunteer position focuses on prevention efforts for males age 12 to 21 by promoting the concept of men taking responsibility with other males to end violence against women. Responsibilities include disseminating Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) materials, coordinating and implementing the MVP curriculum, teaching life skills and more.

Photography workshop Amargosa

The Shoshone Museum is sponsoring a desert photography workshop March 25-26 at the museum.

Join professional photographers to learn the joys of snapping a wide variety of subjects in the Amargosa/Tecopa Lake Beds area.

The $85 workshop will focus on composition, lighting and developing the photographer's 'eye.' All experience levels are welcome, tripod strongly recommended. The registration deadline is Friday.

St. Patrick's Day Parade and dinner

The United Way of Pioneer territory will host the fifth annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration and the second annual St. Patrick's Day Parade on Saturday.

The parade will assemble at 11:30 a.m. at Pahrump Valley High School and proceed down Calvada Blvd. to Honeysuckle Park, where a $6 traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner (with hot dogs for the kids) will be served, along with soft drinks and Irish coffee.

National Quilting Day Saturday

"A Quilt Happening," a celebration of quilts and quilters, will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Station House Ramada Inn, on Main Street in Tonopah.

Bring family quilts for show and tell and to have fun talking about quilting. Quilts 4 Cancer will have quilt kits on hand for those who want to bring their machines to help make quilts for those in the Tonopah area with cancer.

Quilts will also be shown to benefit Nye and Esmeralda Counties' breast cancer programs. Tickets are $5 each and are limited to 500.

The United Way of Pioneer Territory has announced that their annual golf tournament's name has been changed to "The Jerome Pollock Memorial Golf Tournament," which will be held April 15 at Mountain Falls Golf Course.

Wild horse, burro board vacancy

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is requesting public nominations to fill a vacancy on the National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board.

The board advises the BLM and the Forest Service on the management, protection and control of wild horses and burros that roam public lands administered by these agencies.

Advisory board members serve three-year terms, on a staggered term basis. The board meets at least two times a year. Federal and state government employees are not eligible to serve on the board. The individual selected will serve out the remainder of a term that expires July 8, 2008.

Any individual or organization may nominate one or more persons to serve on the advisory board. Individuals may also nominate themselves. Nominations letters and resumes should include each nominee's name, address, phone number, e-mail address, present occupation, explanation of qualifications relevant to representing the public interest, name of the nominee's nominating organization or individual (or an indication that the individual is self-nominated), and a list of endorsements and/or letters of endorsement.

Two scholarships available for seniors

Applications are available in the Pahrump Valley High School guidance office for the following scholarships:

• The Ron & Charlotte Floyd Business Degree scholarship: Seniors with a 3.5 or better GPA planning to major or minor in business are eligible. Student must provide proof of school or community activities and give a statement of plan for the future. Scholarship award is $5,000.

• The 2006 Keith Maeder Trust scholarship: Seniors who plan to attend an accredited college, university or trade school are eligible. Scholarship award is $8,000.

Kiwanis black tie fundraiser

The Kiwanis Club will sponsor a black tie dinner and dance at 7 p.m., with a no-host bar at 6 p.m., April 29 at the Pahrump Nugget. The event, which will include a buffet dinner and a balloon raffle, is to raise funds for school band instruments and a scholarship fund. The public is invited.

A chance to win a trip to Hawaii for two will also be included. The winners will enjoy a one-week stay in a condo in Kona-Kailua. The package includes coach airfare. Valley Electric Youth Seminar

Valley Electric Association is accepting applications from high school sophomores and juniors who live in VEA's service area to attend its 23rd annual Energy Seminar (YES) Leadership Program, to be held July 10-15 at Boreal Ridge, Calif.

YES is a gathering of approximately 80 to 90 high school students who are sponsored by their local rural electric cooperatives from Nevada, California and Oregon. Sheriff DeMeo establishes hotline

Sheriff DeMeo has created a 'Citizen's Comments Hotline' to allow citizens an easier way to express their opinions about the performance of the Sheriff's Office (critical or complimentary), as well as about other county matters. Quilts 4 Cancer volunteers sought

Free breast cancer counseling

The Center for Compassionate Care will provide breast cancer counseling over the telephone at no cost to anyone newly diagnosed, in treatment, having a recurrence or in remission. Life partners, family members or friends of anyone with breast cancer can also speak with a trained counselor. Prostate cancer chapter starting

A chapter of Us TOO, a nationwide non-profit organization, is forming for Pahrump and Amargosa Valley residents to raise prostate cancer awareness. Caucasian men age 60 or greater and African American and Hispanic men age 50 or greater should be tested every year. The disease can be cured if caught early.

New Leash on Life Pet Adoptions, (formerly Southern Nye County Friends of Animals), is now offering no-cost and low-cost spaying and neutering for pets.

Nye County drug discount card

Nye County is now offering a prescription discount card through a joint effort with the National Association of Counties.

There are no age or income requirements and no limits on how many times the card can be used. One card is good for the entire family and can be used anytime a prescription is not covered by insurance. There is a 20 percent average savings. Enrollment is free for Nye County residents.

Civitan seeking funds for camp

The Civitan Club of Pahrump needs to raise about $6,000 in a few months time to send at least 20 people with special needs to camp in Williams, Ariz. In many cases, it is the first time away from home for many of these special needs campers. The cost for the camp runs about $300 per person.

New Leash on Life seeking donations

New Leash on Life Pet Adoptions, (formerly Southern Nye County Friends of Animals), is asking all animal lovers in Pahrump for donations to save the lives of animals in the valley.

The non-profit organization rescues dogs and cats and recently acquired land, so donations of building materials such as chain link fencing, cement, electrical labor, storage sheds and funds to build a cattery and care building would be greatly appreciated.

Animal Shelter helps abuse victims

The Nye County Animal Shelter is starting a new program aimed at assisting victims of domestic abuse by keeping their pets safe.

Test Site volunteer positions available

The Community Advisory Board for Nevada Test Site Programs (CAB) is a nationally chartered U.S. Department of Energy advisory board made up of volunteer residents from urban and rural communities near the Nevada Test Site.

CAB members meet monthly to study and discuss environmental activities that take place at the Test Site and provide recommendations to the Nevada Site Office Environmental Management Program. However, the board does not address issues related to DOE's Yucca Mountain Project.

Teen Care offering free drug testing

Teen Care, a non-profit Christian organization, provides free drug testing of children of concerned parents or guardians.

No longer needed or wanted vehicles may be donated to Nathan Adelson Hospice through Volunteers of America to help people in the community.

Donating a vehicle may result in your receiving a greater value for your car as a charitable tax deduction and helps you avoid the hassles, cost and time demands of selling it.

Burn ban lifted for Nye County

Nye County Emergency Services reminds the community that controlled, open burning is now permissible in Nye County. If you wish to conduct an open, controlled burn, contact the appropriate local agency for information and guidelines prior to any burn.

Power (electric) wheelchairs for senior citizens and the permanently disabled are available through the Three Wishes Inc. program at no cost to the recipient if they qualify.

The wheelchairs are provided to those who cannot walk and cannot self-propel a manual wheelchair in their home, and who meet the additional guidelines of the program. No deposit is required.
