Kiefer, an area businessman when he isn't driving the modifieds, had to be extricated from his car by emergency medical personnel and Flight for Life transported him to UMC. According to reports, Kiefer was attempting to pass Las Vegas driver Dan Fitzgerald on the quarter-mile dirt oval when his car slammed into a concrete wall at high speed. The accident happened during the speedway's Fall Festival motorsports program. Kiefer, in a triumphant return Saturday, outraced 12 rivals to win the IMCA opener on the re-profiled track. Owner Dave Hall was looking to reduce the number of accidents and spin-outs, as well as maintaining the entertainment and competitive values of the facility, now in its 21st season. He got both, as nine drivers completed all 25 laps in the main. Leland Hibdon, Ray Elam, Jerry Buesig Jr., and Jason Pike were in the top five. Jim Bonetti, Jon Jensen, Bill Smith and Todd Nunnally finished sixth through ninth, respectively. One lap back in 10th was Tommy Bolling. The grid for the mini-stock 20-lap feature was even bigger, with 22 starters. And to show how well those drivers adapted to the new conditions, nine were on the final lap and five others were at 19 when the checkered was waved. Joe Rogers Jr. won, closely pursued by Don Wilde, Rick Geist, Frankie England and Jason Skinner. Completing the top 10 were Rick VanBuytene, Bubba Ray, Andrew Oskilanec, Keith Young and Marty Hayes, who was a lap down. In the Coupes of Nevada race, three of the four starters, including winner Bob Clark, went the 20-lap distance. Sam Stringer was second, with Brett Iversen third. Mike Gray was able to complete only seven laps before dropping out. In the 20-lap Super Stock main, VanBuytene was the winner, outracing Peanut Gott to the finish. Cliff Corn, Milo Petaros and Mike Minarchan also competed. In the Outlaws Karts feature for younger drivers, Taylor Bonetti won the 10-lap event, followed by Cole Hammack, Austin Kiefer and Shane Nunnally. In the pro-4 20-lap feature, Eric Slusher cruised to victory, since none of the other starters was able to complete the race.
