YOUR HEALTH Colon cancer can be beat with preventionPVT
While largely preventable, colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths for men and women in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society. It is estimated that 1,320 new cases of colon cancer will be diagnosed this year in Nevada and 490 will die from the disease. An estimated 55,170 deaths due to colorectal cancer are expected to occur in 2006, accounting for approximately 10 percent of cancer deaths in the United States this year. Early Colon cancer often has no symptoms, which is why getting tested for colon cancer is so important. Men and women age 50 or greater are at risk even if they have no symptoms or family history of the disease and should ask their doctor about getting tested. Found in its earliest stages, the survival rate for colon cancer is 90 percent. March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. During the month of March, a free information kit on colon cancer and a guidebook, American Cancer Society's Complete Guide to Colorectal Cancer, will be available through the American Cancer Society. For a free information kit or guidebook, call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345 or visit www.cancer.org |
