Benefit auction Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon family groups of the Pahrump Valley are sponsoring a benefit auction open to the public at 1 p.m. March 5 at Petrack Park, located at Highway 160 and Basin Avenue. Wild horse, burro board vacancy The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is requesting public nominations to fill a vacancy on the National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board. The board advises the BLM and the Forest Service on the management, protection and control of wild horses and burros that roam public lands administered by these agencies. Advisory Board members serve three-year terms, on a staggered term basis. The board meets at least two times a year. Federal and state government employees are not eligible to serve on the board. The individual selected will serve out the remainder of a term that expires July 8, 2008. Any individual or organization may nominate one or more persons to serve on the Advisory Board. Individuals may also nominate themselves. Nominations letters and resumes should include each nominee's name, address, phone number, e-mail address, present occupation, explanation of qualifications relevant to representing the public interest, name of the nominee's nominating organization or individual (or an indication that the individual is self-nominated), and a list of endorsements and/or letters of endorsement. Call 537-2020 and leave a message to apply. Nye County drug discount card Nye County is now offering a prescription discount card through a joint effort with the National Association of Counties. There are no age or income requirements and no limits on how many times the card can be used. One card is good for the entire family and can be used anytime a prescription is not covered by insurance. There is a 20 percent average savings. Enrollment is free for Nye County residents. Cards are available at Nye County Health and Human Services, 250 N. Highway 160, Ste. 4 (751-7095) and at 1120 Globemallow Lane in Tonopah (775-482-8125). Eastern Star donates teddy bears for kids The Eastern Star Stardust Chapter No. 32, as an expression of their interest in local needs, has donated more than 30 teddy bears to the Nye County Sheriff's Department to be given to children when they are involved in accidents. Another similar gift of teddy bears and lap robes has gone to Family Resources for their W.I.C. program. 'Rally for a Cure' golf tournament The eighth annual Rally for a Cure golf tournament, sponsored by the Pahrump Valley Ladies' Golf Association, will be held Saturday at the Willow Creek Golf Course. Anchorwoman Paula Francis from Channel 8 and other guest speakers will discuss advances in research. Start time for the tournament is 9 a.m., using a scramble format. The entry fee for the tournament is $52 for the general public and $27 for Willow Creek Golf Course members. Nomination forms are available at all area Wal-Marts through Friday for the 11th annual Teacher of the Year program. Anyone can nominate a teacher: current and past students, parents and/or co-workers. Local winners, selected by Wal-Mart, will receive $1,000 for their schools and will have the option to apply for state honors. State winners will be selected by Phi Delta Kappa and receive $10,000 for their schools. One national winner will receive $25,000 for his/her school. Wal-Mart donated $40,000 in the state of Nevada through the Teacher of the Year program. Jenny Ricci of Brown Elementary School in Reno was the 2005 State Teacher of the Year winner. Blood drive at community center The Rotary Club and United Blood Services will conduct a blood drive from 4-8 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bob Ruud Community Center, located at 150 N. Highway 160 and Basin Avenue. Eligible donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh more than 110 pounds and present proper identification. The average donation time is about 45 to 60 minutes. Test drive a new Chrysler Saturday Help Nye and Esmeralda Counties by test-driving a new Chrysler at 10 a.m. at the Willow Creek Golf Course. Chrysler will donate $5 for each person who does a test drive and this will help those in the area with breast cancer, for screenings and other services. Golf association booze basket raffle The Willow Creek Ladies Golf Association will hold "A basket of booze and other goodies" raffle for Rally Day Saturday at the Willow Creek Golf Course. 'Leader of the Pack' auditions to be held Auditions for singers and dancers for the production, 'Leader of the Pack,' will be held Monday and Tuesday at the Pahrump Valley High School auditorium. Open auditions begin at 6 p.m. for teenagers and at 7 p.m. for adults both days. This production is a musical revue based on the life and music of Ellie Greenwich. New Job Connect business program Local government and business advocacy representatives have come together to create a program called 'Get Connected.' The program will kick off with a welcome breakfast, by invitation only, on Tuesday at the Rural Nevada Job Connect office. This program will target new and existing businesses in the Pahrump area in an effort to provide them with information and resources available to them. Representatives from Nye County, the Town of Pahrump, the Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Rural Nevada Development Corporation, EDEN and others will provide an overview from each of their organizations' perspectives. Highway 160 and Basin Avenue: Tuesday - Mammograms, 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Wednesday - Mammograms, clinical breast exams and cervical cancer screenings (pap smears), 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Thursday - Mammograms, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Clinical breast exams and pap smears will only be held on Wednesday. SCORE counselors needed The Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), will conduct a free workshop (two sessions, one at 10 a.m. and the other at 2 p.m.) March 2 in the Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce conference room. The workshop is for those who have any business experience and who are interested in becoming a SCORE counselor to help clients in the Pahrump area start a new business. Our Lady of the Valley fish fry Our Lady of the Valley, sponsored by the Daughters of Mary, will hold a fundraising fish fry from 4-7 p.m. March 3. Movers and Shakers to meet March 2 The regular meeting of the Pahrump Valley Movers and Shakers, a support group for people with Parkinson's disease, will be held at 9:30 a.m. March 2 at the Desert Greens Clubhouse, 350 W. Wilson Avenue (next to site of the new hospital). The program will be announced. Jodi Servin, M.S.W., L.S.W. from the National Parkinson Foundation, is the facilitator and consultant. Senior Resource Carnival March 9 Nathan Adelson Hospice is sponsoring the second annual Senior Resource Carnival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 9 at the Bob Ruud Community Center. Representatives from up to 30 organizations will be present to provide written material and answer questions concerning meal planning, funeral planning, reverse mortgages, the medical field and everything in between. A rep from the U.S.D.A. will also be there to explain funds availability to seniors in a rural community. Multiple sclerosis benefit golf tourney The Second Annual Multiple Sclerosis Benefit Golf Tournament, in memory of Viyella Henderson, will be held March 11 at Lakewood Executive Golf Course at 1472 Mt. Charleston Drive. The tournament will be a four-person Better Ball Scramble. Teams created by the tournament committee will consist of A, B, C and D flight players. The tourney will be played in two flights of 72 golfers, one at 8:30 a.m., and one at noon. Flights will be assigned based on preference and date of entry. Multiple Sclerosis is a disease marked by patches of hardened tissue in the brain or spinal cord. Symptoms range from subtle fatigue to blindness and/or complete paralysis. Sheriff DeMeo establishes hotline Sheriff DeMeo has created a 'Citizen's Comments Hotline' to allow citizens an easier way to express their opinions about the performance of the Sheriff's Office (critical or complimentary), as well as about other county matters. The hotline will be available 24 hours a day, utilizing an answering machine. The phone number is 1 (800) 794-9834. Free breast cancer counseling The Center for Compassionate Care will provide breast cancer counseling over the telephone at no cost to anyone newly diagnosed, in treatment, having a recurrence or in remission. Life partners, family members or friends of anyone with breast cancer can also speak with a trained counselor. The CCC is a non-profit counseling agency that operates under the direction of the Nathan Adelson Group. Call the CCC at 1-866-471-3273. Prostate cancer chapter starting A chapter of Us TOO, a nationwide non-profit organization, is forming for Pahrump and Amargosa Valley residents to raise prostate cancer awareness. Caucasian men at least age 60 and African American and Hispanic men at least age 50 should be tested every year. The disease can be cured if caught early. Civitan seeking funds for camp The Civitan Club of Pahrump needs to raise about $6,000 in a few months to send at least 20 people with special needs to camp in Williams, Ariz. In many cases, it is the first time away from home for many of these special needs campers. The cost for the camp runs about $300 per person. Boy Scout project Boy Scout Troop No. 808 is developing a camping equipment storage project where equipment can be loaned free of charge to boy and girl scouts in the Pahrump Valley who cannot afford to buy their own. The troop is requesting donations of any used or new camping items for this project, such as tents, stoves, pots, utensils, sleeping bags, etc ... Pick up is available for any items. New Leash on Life seeking donations New Leash on Life Pet Adoptions, (formerly Southern Nye County Friends of Animals), is asking all animal lovers in Pahrump for donations to save the lives of animals in the valley. The non-profit organization rescues dogs and cats and recently acquired land, so donations of building materials such as chain link fencing, cement, electrical labor, storage sheds and funds to build a cattery and care building would be greatly appreciated. Animal Shelter helps abuse victims The Nye County Animal Shelter is starting a new program aimed at assisting victims of domestic abuse by keeping their pets safe. Anyone willing to provide a temporary safe place for the pets of those afraid to leave an abusive environment may contact the shelter at 751-7020. Test Site volunteer positions available The Community Advisory Board for Nevada Test Site Programs (CAB) is a nationally chartered U.S. Department of Energy advisory board made up of volunteer residents from urban and rural communities near the Nevada Test Site. CAB members meet monthly to study and discuss environmental activities that take place at the Test Site and provide recommendations to the Nevada Site Office Environmental Management Program. However, the board does not address issues related to DOE's Yucca Mountain Project. No training or experience is required. Teen Care offering free drug testing Teen Care, a non-profit Christian organization, provides free drug testing of children of concerned parents or guardians. Hospice accepting old car donations No longer needed or wanted vehicles may be donated to Nathan Adelson Hospice through Volunteers of America to help people in the community. Donating a vehicle may result in your receiving a greater value for your car as a charitable tax deduction and helps you avoid the hassles, cost and time demands of selling it. Burn ban lifted for Nye County Nye County Emergency Services reminds the community that controlled, open burning is now permissible in Nye County.
