Boy Scout project Boy Scout Troop No. 808 is developing a camping equipment storage project where equipment can be loaned free of charge to boy and girl scouts in the Pahrump Valley who cannot afford to buy their own. The troop is requesting donations of any used or new camping items for this project, such as tents, stoves, pots, utensils, sleeping bags, etc ... Pick up is available for any items. New Leash on Life seeking donations New Leash on Life Pet Adoptions, (formerly Southern Nye County Friends of Animals), is asking all animal lovers in Pahrump for donations to save the lives of animals in the valley. The non-profit organization rescues dogs and cats and recently acquired land, so donations of building materials such as chain link fencing, cement, electrical labor, storage sheds and funds to build a cattery and care building would be greatly appreciated. Spanish immersion programs for high school students The Interamerican University Studies Institute will offer two programs in Latin America this summer for students between 15 and 17 years old who will have completed two years of high school Spanish by June. Music ensemble to perform at PVHS The Pahrump Performing Arts Council will sponsor a performance by The Sierra Winds, a chamber music ensemble, at 7 p.m. today in the auditorium at Pahrump Valley High School. 'Rally for a Cure' golf tournament The eighth annual Rally for a Cure golf tournament, sponsored by the Pahrump Valley Ladies' Golf Association, will be held Feb. 25 at the Willow Creek Golf Course. Anchorwoman Paula Francis from Channel 8 and other guest speakers will discuss advances in research. Start time for the tournament is 9 a.m., using a scramble format. The entry fee for the tournament is $52 for the general public and $27 for Willow Creek Golf Course members. Senior Golden Years fashion show Ms. Senior Golden Years USA Queens Court, with their board of directors, will host their Fourth Annual Fashion Show, Luncheon and Silent Auction at 1 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Saddle West Hotel & Casino. Multiple sclerosis benefit golf tourney The Second Annual Multiple Sclerosis Benefit Golf Tournament, in memory of Viyella Henderson, will be held March 11 at Lakewood Executive Golf Course at 1472 Mt. Charleston Drive. The tournament will be a four-person Better Ball Scramble. Teams created by the tournament committee will consist of A, B, C and D flight players. The tourney will be played in two flights of 72 golfers, one at 8:30 a.m., and one at noon. Flights will be assigned based on preference and date of entry. Calvada Blvd. This workshop is designed to teach individuals how to be caregivers in a home/hospice or health care/nursing environment. Sheriff DeMeo establishes hotline Sheriff DeMeo has created a 'Citizen's Comments Hotline' to allow citizens an easier way to express their opinions about the performance of the Sheriff's Office (critical or complimentary), as well as about other county matters. The hotline will be available 24 hours a day, utilizing an answering machine. The phone number is 1 (800) 794-9834. Free breast cancer counseling The Center for Compassionate Care will provide breast cancer counseling over the telephone at no cost to anyone newly diagnosed, in treatment, having a recurrence or in remission. Life partners, family members or friends of anyone with breast cancer can also speak with a trained counselor. Prostate cancer chapter starting A chapter of Us TOO, a nationwide non-profit organization, is forming for Pahrump and Amargosa Valley residents to raise prostate cancer awareness. Caucasian men at least age 60 and African American and Hispanic men at least age 50 should be tested every year. The disease can be cured if caught early. Animal Shelter helps abuse victims The Nye County Animal Shelter is starting a new program aimed at assisting victims of domestic abuse by keeping their pets safe. Test Site volunteer positions available The Community Advisory Board for Nevada Test Site Programs (CAB) is a nationally chartered U.S. Department of Energy advisory board made up of volunteer residents from urban and rural communities near the Nevada Test Site. CAB members meet monthly to study and discuss environmental activities that take place at the Test Site and provide recommendations to the Nevada Site Office Environmental Management Program. However, the board does not address issues related to DOE's Yucca Mountain Project. No training or experience is required. Burn ban lifted for Nye County Nye County Emergency Services reminds the community that controlled, open burning is now permissible in Nye County. Quilts 4 Cancer seeking volunteers Quilts 4 Cancer will soon open its workshop to meet a goal for 2006 of making 500 quilts for children and adults in the area with cancer. The organization needs volunteers to wash and iron fabric and donations of or funds for irons and general sewing supplies to accomplish this. A $25 donation offsets the cost of one quilt. Charleston Drive West. Soroptimists club anticipates growth Pahrump's Soroptimists International Club is working on expanding the club and preparing for its chartering celebration. This philanthropic women's organization is working toward becoming an important part of Pahrump's non-profit and business community. The club's meetings are scheduled for the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the Pahrump Winery RV Park clubhouse. Call Don at 537-1541. Volunteer advocates for children needed The Fifth Judicial District Court is seeking volunteers to act as a Court-Appointed Special Advocate for children in need. CASA is a nationwide organization. CASA volunteers spend time with a child (or children) and make recommendations to the court.
