Fiber Arts 2006

United Way accreditation under way

The United Way of Pioneer Territory is inviting nonprofit agencies to provide a Letter of Intent to apply for United Way accreditation, which is the first step toward becoming a United Way agency and receiving funding for programs.

To apply for accreditation, write a short letter expressing interest in applying for accreditation to United Way of Pioneer Territory, P.O. Box 5019, Pahrump, NV 89041 (letters must be postmarked no later than today) or call 751-2400. PVHS drama club presents two plays

Pahrump Valley High School will hold two plays, "Hard Candy," and "A Simple Task," at 7 p.m. Saturday at the PVHS auditorium.

Field representatives from the Las Vegas Social Security office will make their monthly visit to the Nye County community at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Seminar to discuss hospice program

Nathan Adelson Hospice will present a seminar on their program and teamwork from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at the Channel 30/62 Studio, located at 250 Nopah Vista. The seminar will also be shown in the conference room at the hospice, located at 1480 E. Calvada Blvd., Ste. 900. Attendees at the studio must be there by 9:30 a.m.

Presenters will provide a comprehensive look at the Nathan Adelson Hospice program in Pahrump and will give the community an inside look at what makes up a team. The presenters scheduled are: RN Robyn Schoenfeld, admitting nurse; LPN Paula Whalen; CNA Edwin Monge; and Pat Smith, volunteer.

Movers and Shakers to meet Thursday

The regular meeting of the Pahrump Valley Movers and Shakers, a support group for people with Parkinson's disease, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Desert Greens Clubhouse, 350 W. Wilson Avenue (next to site of the new hospital).

Jodi Servin, M.S.W., L.S.W. from the National Parkinson Foundation, is the facilitator and consultant. Friends of the Library meeting

Dances of Universal Peace

Spanish immersion programs for high school students

The Interamerican University Studies Institute will offer two programs in Latin America this summer for students between 15 and 17 years old who will have completed two years of high school Spanish by June. The programs are: Costa Rica Pura Vida, which focuses on biology, and Artes en Mexico, which provides an opportunity to work with Mexican art teachers. Both programs include Spanish immersion.

Church's Valentine's tea party for girls

Hospice to provide caregiver training

Nathan Adelson Hospice will offer a two-day workshop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 14-15 in the training room at Southern Nevada Job Connect at 2101 E. Calvada Blvd.

This workshop is designed to teach individuals how to be caregivers in a home/hospice or health care/nursing environment. The 16-hour training is free; participants will receive a certificate of attendance and job placement opportunities.

New art gallery at Winery R.V. Park

The Pahrump Arts Council recently created a new gallery to feature the works of local artists in a new mixed media show at the Pahrump Valley Winery R.V. Park clubhouse. The show will run through Feb. 24.

Senior Golden Years fashion show

Ms. Senior Golden Years USA Queens Court, with their board of directors, will host their Fourth Annual Fashion Show, Luncheon and Silent Auction at 1 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Saddle West Hotel & Casino.

The Ms. Senior Golden Years USA Queens Court will model items from Kimberly's Fashions, CC's Bridal & Formal Wear and Sunflower Fashions.

Multiple sclerosis benefit golf tourney

The Second Annual Multiple Sclerosis Benefit Golf Tournament, in memory of Viyella Henderson, will be held March 11 at Lakewood Executive Golf Course at 1472 Mt. Charleston Drive.

The tournament will be a four-person Better Ball Scramble. Teams created by the tournament committee will consist of A, B, C and D flight players. The tourney will be played in two flights of 72 golfers, one at 8:30 a.m., and one at noon. Flights will be assigned based on preference and date of entry. Free tax-aide service

Internal Revenue Service Tax-Aide Volunteers will be in room A of the Bob Ruud Community Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays through April 19.

This free, confidential tax preparation and free E-Filing service is available to all taxpayers, middle or low income, with special attention to those 60 years and older. IRS trained volunteers are also available to shut-ins.

Sheriff DeMeo has created a 'Citizen's Comments Hotline' to allow citizens an easier way to express their opinions about the performance of the Sheriff's Office (critical or complimentary), as well as about other county matters. Free breast cancer counseling

The Center for Compassionate Care will provide breast cancer counseling over the telephone at no cost to anyone newly diagnosed, in treatment, having a recurrence or in remission. Life partners, family members or friends of anyone with breast cancer can also speak with a trained counselor. PV Fire-Rescue seeking volunteers

The Pahrump Valley Fire-Rescue Service is now recruiting prospective volunteers for the following:

€ Burn desk: Heavy phones/light data entry; training provided. Sign up for one or two four-hour shifts per week, 8 a.m. to noon or noon to 4 p.m.

€ Firefighters and EMS volunteers: Must pass a general aptitude test, agility test, oral interview and physical exam.

No longer needed or wanted vehicles may be donated to Nathan Adelson Hospice through Volunteers of America to help people in the community.

Donating a vehicle may result in your receiving a greater value for your car as a charitable tax deduction and helps you avoid the hassles, cost and time demands of selling it.

Burn ban lifted for Nye County

Nye County Emergency Services reminds the community that controlled, open burning is now permissible in Nye County. If you wish to conduct an open, controlled burn, contact the appropriate local agency for information and guidelines prior to any burn.

Quilts 4 Cancer seeking volunteers

Quilts 4 Cancer will soon open its workshop to meet a goal for 2006 of making 500 quilts for children and adults in the area with cancer. The organization needs volunteers to wash and iron fabric and donations of or funds for irons and general sewing supplies to accomplish this. A $25 donation offsets the cost of one quilt.

School district early childhood screening

The Nye County School District has a responsibility to locate, assess and identify children ages 3-5 who are not enrolled in any school program and who may have some kind of developmental delays. Pahrump's Soroptimists International Club is working on expanding the club and preparing for its chartering celebration. This philanthropic women's organization is working toward becoming an important part of Pahrump's non-profit and business community.

Volunteer advocates for children needed

The Fifth Judicial District Court is seeking volunteers to act as a Court-Appointed Special Advocate for children in need. CASA is a nationwide organization.

CASA volunteers spend time with a child (or children) and make recommendations to the court.

Target shooting notice

People target shooting on public lands are urged to use extreme caution. Steel core ammunition is a known fire starter. The head of steel core ammo is coated with copper and will spark on rocks after going through a target, igniting vegetation. Shooters are responsible for fire suppression costs incurred by shooting.

For those individuals undergoing breast cancer treatment, gas, meals and lodging assistance, when necessary, is also available.

Power wheelchairs

Power (electric) wheelchairs for senior citizens and the permanently disabled are available through the Three Wishes Inc. program at no cost to the recipient if they qualify.

The wheelchairs are provided to those who cannot walk and cannot self-propel a manual wheelchair in their home, and who meet the additional guidelines of the program. No deposit is required.
