Damonte Ranch to get artificial turf

SPECIAL TO THE PVT

The Washoe County School District will be getting its first artificial-turf football field in the fall and it will go where most district coaches would agree it is needed the most, the Web site nevprep.com reported.

Washoe County director of student services Eddie Bonine told the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association's Board of Control earlier this month that the district plans to install artificial turf at Damonte Ranch, the newest of the district's 12 comprehensive high schools.

Bonine was out of town Monday and unavailable for comment, but NIAA assistant director Donnie Nelson said it was his understanding that the project is expected to get underway this summer.

According to Nelson, Damonte Ranch's stadium is the biggest in the district with a seating capacity of about 5,000 and thus would be a logical location for postseason football and soccer tournaments.

Installing artificial turf also would solve a problem for the Damonte Ranch program, which began play in 2004 but did not field a varsity team this past season because of numbers problems. (The school's enrollment is 923, well below the 4A minimum of 1,200.)

The natural turf, installed in the fall of 2003 when the school opened, never knitted properly and as a result the field is generally acknowledged to be the worst high school facility in the Reno-Sparks area.
