Reception for local artist Friday The Pahrump Arts Council will host a reception for local landscape artist Betty Ross from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at the Pahrump Community Library at 701 East St. Come and meet Ross and view her 'One Woman Show' of big skies, strong mountains and stark deserts. Pahrump Library holiday schedule The Pahrump Community Library on 701 East St. will be closed for the holiday season on Saturday, Monday, Dec. 31 at 1 p.m., and Jan. 3. Christmas in April applications available Pahrump Valley homeowner applications for Project 2006, "Christmas in April," may be picked up at the Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce, Pahrump Senior Center and No To Abuse. Library to present local authors The Pahrump Community Library will host two local authors at 701 East St. Seajay Freedman, author of "The Spirit of Understanding," "Loves Immortal Dream of World Peace," and "Opening a Writer's Skeleton Closet," will visit and sign her books from 1-3 p.m. Dec. 28. Movers and Shakers to meet Thursday The regular meeting of the Pahrump Valley Movers and Shakers, a support group for people with Parkinson's disease, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 5 at the Desert Greens Clubhouse, 350 W. Wilson Avenue (next to site of the new hospital). Jodi Servin, M.S.W., L.S.W. from the National Parkinson Foundation, is the facilitator and consultant. Library to hold winter outwear drive The Pahrump Community Library will collect coats, hats, sweaters and any other type of winter outerwear clothing Jan. 9-21. Spanish immersion programs for high school students The Interamerican University Studies Institute will offer two programs in Latin America next summer for students between 15 and 17 years old who will have completed two years of high school Spanish by June 2006. The programs are: Costa Rica Pura Vida, which focuses on biology, and Artes en Mexico, which provides an opportunity to work with Mexican art teachers. Both programs include Spanish immersion. Christmas tree cutting prohibited The U.S. Forest Service reminds the public that no Christmas tree cutting is permitted in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area (NRA), including the Mt. Charleston area. The U.S. Forest Service is patrolling the Spring Mountains NRA to prevent illegal harvesting of trees. Violators can face misdemeanor charges up to $250 and receive a $500 fine per tree. Sheriff DeMeo establishes hotline Sheriff DeMeo has created a 'Citizen's Comments Hotline' to allow citizens an easier way to express their opinions about the performance of the Sheriff's Office (critical or complimentary), as well as about other county matters. Musicians and singers needed Shadow Mountain Christian Fellowship is seeking musicians and singers, ages 15-21, to take part in a community youth praise band, utilizing sophisticated instrumentation and choral arrangements. Pathways seeking math tutors The Pathways program is looking for tutors, primarily in the area of mathematics. However, anyone interested in tutoring students in other areas are also needed. Free breast cancer counseling The Center for Compassionate Care will provide breast cancer counseling over the telephone at no cost to anyone newly diagnosed, in treatment, having a recurrence or in remission. Life partners, family members or friends of anyone with breast cancer can also speak with a trained counselor. School district early childhood screening The Nye County School District has a responsibility to locate, assess and identify children ages 3-5 who are not enrolled in any school program and who may have some kind of developmental delays. If your child is currently being served through Nevada Early Intervention, please contact them about 90 days prior to your child turning three years of age. Volunteer advocates for children needed The Fifth Judicial District Court is seeking volunteers to act as a Court-Appointed Special Advocate for children in need. CASA is a nationwide organization. CASA volunteers spend time with a child (or children) and make recommendations to the court. Training will be for one week and volunteers must be able to pass a criminal background check. Senior Companions seeks volunteers Low income seniors 60 and over can earn $212 per month tax-free by volunteering for Senior Companions, a program that provides companionship, socialization and transportation to other seniors who have difficulty with daily living tasks. Burn ban lifted for Nye County Nye County Emergency Services reminds the community that controlled, open burning is now permissible in Nye County. In all other Nye County communities, contact the local Nye County Sheriff's Office dispatch. Target shooting notice People target shooting on public lands are urged to use extreme caution. Steel core ammunition is a known fire starter. The head of steel core ammo is coated with copper and will spark on rocks after going through a target, igniting vegetation. Shooters are responsible for fire suppression costs incurred by shooting. Shooting is not allowed in the following areas: Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area; Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area; Lake Mead National Recreation Area; Sunrise Mountain; Nellis; and Apex. Komen grant funds available Grant funds are available for Esmeralda and Nye County residents through the Las Vegas Affiliate of the Susan G. Power wheelchairs Power (electric) wheelchairs for senior citizens and the permanently disabled are available through the Three Wishes Inc. program at no cost to the recipient if they qualify. Rotaract is an international program of Rotary International for young professionals, ages 18-30, who want to make a difference. Rotaract clubs conduct meetings, usually every two weeks. Members use their weekends for service projects, social events and workshops. They work hard, but believe in having a good time.
