Cox: 'This is a cry' for help
With that Cox asked that every Pahrump church and social service organization participate in providing the financial means by which the senior center can stay open, at least temporarily, until the county can determine if it can legally and financially come to the long-term rescue of the non-profit corporation. "This is not about boards of directors; it's not about egos; it's about the seniors," Cox said late Tuesday at the Board of Commissioners' meeting in Tonopah. Cox was the only commissioner in Pahrump, where the meeting was teleconferenced to the Bob Ruud Community Center. "If everyone chipped in we could have a nice place for these seniors," Cox said. "Let's get the chain going," she said after Commissioner Gary Hollis made a voluntary donation of $300, a gesture duplicated by the other two commissioners meeting in Tonopah and by Cox in Pahrump. Commission Chairwoman Candice Trummell was not present. Nye County Comptroller Marie Owens also pledged to donate $300 to the cause. "Pahrump needs to consider this their Hurricane Katrina," said Commissioner Joni Eastley. So far only the elders of the Hilltop Church of north Pahrump have come forward as an organization offering to provide funding for the senior center, according to Al Barrera Jr., spokesman for the church. The church owns and operates Channels 30 and 62 in Pahrump, and Barerra said its broadcasting station would be made available to the senior center for fundraising purposes, as well as for media exposure of "forums to debate various issues." Paula King, administrator of the north county's senior services, said the Nevada Division of Aging Services would be willing to take over temporary delivery of Pahrump's meals-on-wheels, and that Catholic Charities in Las Vegas may be able to help with food donations. Pledges of financial assistance and contributions can be made to: Pahrump Senior Center, 1370 Basin Ave., Pahrump, NV 89048. |
