Christmas tree cutting prohibited

The U.S. Forest Service reminds the public that no Christmas tree cutting is permitted in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area (NRA), including the Mt. Charleston area.

The U.S. Forest Service is patrolling the Spring Mountains NRA to prevent illegal harvesting of trees. Violators can face misdemeanor charges up to $250 and receive a $500 fine per tree.

Veterans assistance

Sharon Wagner from the Office of Veterans Services will be at VFW Post 10054, 4651 S. Homestead Road to provide assistance to veterans, widows and dependents of veterans from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2-5 p.m. today, Tuesday and Dec. 14. Appointments are a must. The December calendar of events for the American Legion Post 22 and Auxiliary Unit 22 is as follows:

Movers and Shakers to meet Thursday

The regular meeting of the Pahrump Valley Movers and Shakers, a support group for people with Parkinson's disease, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Desert Greens Clubhouse, 350 W. Wilson Avenue (next to site of the new hospital).

Program speakers will continue the discussion on pain management, presenting alternative treatments as well as traditional methods. Jodi Servin, M.S.W., L.S.W., from the National Parkinson Foundation, will be the facilitator and consultant. Anyone with a movement disorder is invited to attend.

Teen Night at Wulfy's

St. Martin's in the Desert Episcopal Church, in partnership with the Nye Communities Coalition, will host a Teen Night from 6-9 p.m. Friday at Wulfy's.

Choir to perform Christmas concert

The Pahrump Community Choir will hold a Christmas concert, "An (almost) Traditional Christmas!" at 7 p.m. Friday at the Bob Ruud Community Center, located on the corner of Highway 160 and Basin Street. PAC to hold artists' reception

The Pahrump Arts Council will host a reception for many local artists who will display their artwork in a mixed-medium, open show, from 1-3 p.m., Friday at the Pahrump Valley Winery R.V. Park clubhouse.

Cinderella Youth Scholarship Pageant

The Nye County Preliminary Cinderella Pageant will be held Friday at the Bob Ruud Community Center. Registration will be at 4:30 p.m., interviews at 5 p.m., and show time will commence at 5:45 p.m.

The Cinderella Youth Scholarship Program and Pageant is a youth development program designed to build confidence and provide educational opportunities.

The pageant will give anyone, from newborns to 26 year olds, the opportunity to compete in various divisions on local, state and international levels for over $100,000 in cash and prizes.

Elks Hoop Shoot at J.G. Saturday

The local Elks lodge will hold its annual Hoop Shoot contest Saturday in the J.G. Johnson Elementary School gymnasium. Sign ups start at 12:30 p.m. and the free shoot contest will start at 1:30 p.m.

Boys and girls born after April 1, 1991 and before April 1, 1996 are eligible to compete.

Hospice to hold 'Festival of Trees'

Tickets are on sale for the Nathan Adelson Hospice 'Festival of Trees' cocktail reception, which will be held from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at the Pahrump Nugget convention center.

Magician-comedian Dan Rodriguez will auction decorated trees that were sponsored by community members at 4 p.m. The silent auction will close at 5 p.m. All proceeds will benefit Nathan Adelson Hospice.

Hospice to hold memorial service

Spanish immersion programs for high school students

The Interamerican University Studies Institute will offer two programs in Latin America next summer for students between 15 and 17 years old who will have completed two years of high school Spanish by June, 2006. The programs are: Costa Rica Pura Vida, which focuses on biology, and Artes en Mexico, which provides an opportunity to work with Mexican art teachers. Both programs include Spanish immersion.

Free breast cancer counseling

The Center for Compassionate Care will provide breast cancer counseling over the telephone at no cost to anyone newly diagnosed, in treatment, having a recurrence or in remission. Life partners, family members or friends of anyone with breast cancer can also speak with a trained counselor. School district early childhood screening

The Nye County School District has a responsibility to locate, assess and identify children ages 3-5 who are not enrolled in any school program and who may have some kind of developmental delays. If your child is currently being served through Nevada Early Intervention, please contact them about 90 days prior to your child turning three years of age.

If you live in Pahrump, to make an appointment for a pre-evaluation interview, please call the Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) office at 751-2638. The new office is located at 2200 S. Mt. Charleston Drive West.

Volunteer advocates for children needed

The Fifth Judicial District Court is seeking volunteers to act as a Court-Appointed Special Advocate for children in need.

CASA, a nationwide organization, volunteers spend time with a child (or children) and make recommendations to the court.

Training will be for one week and volunteers must be able to pass a criminal background check.

Senior Companions seeks volunteers

Low income seniors 60 and over can earn $212 per month tax-free by volunteering for Senior Companions, a program that provides companionship, socialization and transportation to other seniors who have difficulty with daily living tasks.

Burn ban lifted for Nye County

Nye County Emergency Services reminds the community that controlled, open burning is now permissible in Nye County. If you wish to conduct an open, controlled burn, contact the appropriate local agency for information and guidelines prior to any burn.

Contact Pahrump Fire Rescue at 727-5658. In all other Nye County communities, contact the local Nye County Sheriff's Office dispatch.

Target shooting notice

People target shooting on public lands are urged to use extreme caution. Steel core ammunition is a known fire starter. The head of steel core ammo is coated with copper and will spark on rocks after going through a target, igniting vegetation. Shooters are responsible for fire suppression costs incurred by shooting.

Shooting is not allowed in the following areas: Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area; Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area; Lake Mead National Recreation Area; Sunrise Mountain; Nellis; and Apex. For more information contact the Nevada Division of Wildlife at 702-486-5127.

Marine Corps League Pahrump Detachment

Susan G. Komen grant funds available

Grant funds are available for Esmeralda and Nye County residents through the Las Vegas Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to assist qualified individuals with mammograms, as well as some additional tests, if needed. For those individuals undergoing breast cancer treatment, gas, meals and lodging assistance, when necessary, is also available.

Power wheelchairs

Power (electric) wheelchairs for senior citizens and the permanently disabled are available through the Three Wishes Inc. program at no cost to the recipient if they qualify.

The wheelchairs are provided to those who cannot walk and cannot self-propel a manual wheelchair in their home, and who meet the additional guidelines of the program. No deposit is required.

Rotaract Club seeking volunteers

The newly formed Rotaract Club of Pahrump is seeking volunteers. Rotaract is an international program of Rotary International for young professionals, ages 18-30, who want to make a difference.

Rotaract clubs conduct meetings, usually every two weeks. Members use their weekends for service projects, social events and workshops. They work hard, but believe in having a good time. Rotaractors hold barbecues, camping trips, dances, cultural events and more.

There are 163,000 members in 7,088 Rotaract clubs in 151 countries.
