NEVADAN ON WINNING TEAM Ford truck first in Vegas-to-Reno race
By DON McDERMOTT Sponsored by Pacific Monarch Resorts, B.F. Goodrich and Ford, the blue truck out of the 1400P won the Best in The Desert-sanctioned race in 9 hours, 17 minutes, 55 seconds. The winning team included Ronnie Gillespie, from Gardnerville, Nevada, along with Californians Nick Baldwin of Laguna Hills, and Jeff Lewis of San Clemente. The margin of victory was less than eight minutes. Second in 9:25:14 was an 8000P series Ford. Californians Curt and Todd DeLuc of Cherry Valley, and John Becka of Irvine were on the team, along with Brent Marin of Phoenix, Ariz. A total of 77 trucks and cars started the race; only 39 finished as the fast, but rocky course proved hazardous. The 39th vehicle to finish, a Ford in the 7300P class, was clocked in 19:22:25. The Brian Collins-Larry Ragland team that won the Nevada 1000 in the Tonopah area in July was ninth overall; their Chevrolet truck finished in 10:11:21. Alan Levinson of Blue Diamond did a solo drive in a 1200P-class Ford, completing the race in 10:31:12 to finish 11th. Johnny Campbell and Honda teammate Steve Hengeveld won the motorcycle race in 8:24:02, just 42 seconds ahead of another Honda, co-ridden by Kendall Norman and Robby Bell. All four riders are from California. Dal Shemp of Pahrump and Max Eddy Jr. of Barstow, Calif., were sixth overall, riding their KTM to the finish line in 9:35:58. The quad winner, in 10:31:10, was a Honda, driven by Gregory Price of Las Vegas, Kevin Canepa of Lake Havasu, and Mitch Cannepa of Searchlight. Second in 10:34:53 was tge Honda team of Josh Frederick of Moapa and Cyle Chislock of Murrieta, Calif. Second in the Quad P class was Shaun Moore of Pahrump and Nicholas Granlund of Las Vegas. Their time was 10:54:23. The team is sponsored by Floyd's ACE Hardware, Saitta-Trudeau, Double M Construction, Big O Tires and ThreadZ, among others. A total of 105 quads and motorcycles started, with 83 finishing. The last finisher, aboard a KTM, was clocked in 18:06:54. |
