Free youth tutoring workshops next week

Nevada JobConnect will present free youth tutoring workshops at 6 p.m. Monday and at 10 a.m. Sept. 24. at 2101 E. Calvada Blvd.

Church event for food bank

Molested children golf tournament

The Knights for Molested Children Golf Tournament will be held Sept. 24 at Mountain Falls.

Proceeds will go to support the Pahrump community in the form of educational grants, scholarships and community projects.

Senior center potluck Sunday

AARP driver safety programs to be held

The first of a monthly series of AARP driver safety programs will be held Tuesday and Wednesday at the Pahrump Community Library, 701 East St.

The AARP driver safety program is an eight-hour classroom refresher course for drivers 50 and older. Participants who take the course will receive a certificate, which may help them obtain a discount on automobile insurance. AARP membership is not required to enroll.

Community chorus seeking new voices

The Pahrump Community Chorus, under the direction of Andy Barnum, will begin rehearsals at 7 p.m., Wednesday at the Rosemary Clarke Middle School music room.

The chorus is looking for new voices to sing and participate in the Holiday Concert and the "Pahrump-A-Pum-Pum" sing-a-long on Dec. 3. Rehearsals are every Wednesday.

The chorus, sponsored by the Pahrump Arts Council, is also looking for an accompanist. Piano players are encouraged to audition.

Pahrump Arts Council presents two art shows

The Pahrump Arts Council proudly presents a one-man show highlighting the artwork of John Breathwaite, whose paintings depict ancient, classical, mythological deities of India. The show runs through Sept. 23.

Vocalists needed for 'Cowgirls' auditions

School supply drive

Kaye's Allstate Insurance is accepting school supplies needed for children of low-income families. The Pahrump Family Resource Center, a program of No To Abuse, and Kaye's Allstate Insurance are collaborating for the fifth year to ensure that the children in our community have the supplies they need to start school.

Progressive Choices' clients seeking work

Progressive Choices, Inc., a local 501c3 non-profit organization that provides job training, job development, group enclaves and job follow-along for developmentally disabled adults, is seeking jobs for our clients in Pahrump. Workers are expertly trained by qualified staff in the areas of janitorial, restaurant positions (bussing, serving and seating), yard maintenance and cleanup, grocery bagging and stocking, as well as assembling products in our 2,500 sq. ft. workshop.

Victory Christian Center cookbook

Victory Christian Center has collected the best recipes from its members, their families and friends and compiled them into an attractive keepsake cookbook.

Crafters and bakers wanted for holiday event

The Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Pahrump Tourism Advisory Board, with funding from the Town of Pahrump room tax monies, will be ushering in the holiday season with a "Pahrump-A-Pum-Pum" festival. The event will be held at the Pahrump Valley Auto Plaza on Dec. 3-4.

Local crafters and non-profit groups proficient in baking are needed. In addition to the craft and bake sale vending areas there will be a parade, pictures with Santa, a reading nook, children's craft-making area, a raffle of tastefully decorated trees and wreaths and musical entertainment.

Manse Elementary is asking for community support in collecting "Box Tops for Education."

Burn ban in effect for all of Nye County

Nye County Emergency Services reminds the community that open burning is prohibited in all of Nye County until further notice. Due to extreme fire conditions in all of Nye County the act of open burning has become a public hazard. A public service announcement will be made when the ban is lifted.

Target shooting notice

People target shooting on public lands are urged to use extreme caution. Steel core ammunition is a known fire starter. The head of steel core ammo is coated with copper and will spark on rocks after going through a target, igniting vegetation. Shooters are responsible for fire suppression costs incurred by shooting.

Shooting is not allowed in the following areas: Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area; Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area; Lake Mead National Recreation Area; Sunrise Mountain; Nellis; and Apex. For more information contact the Nevada Division of Wildlife at 702-486-5127.

Marine Corps League Pahrump Detachment

Susan G. Komen grant funds available

Grant funds are available for Esmeralda and Nye County residents through the Las Vegas Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to assist qualified individuals with mammograms, as well as some additional tests, if needed. For those individuals undergoing breast cancer treatment, gas, meals and lodging assistance, when necessary, is also available.

Power wheelchairs

Power (electric) wheelchairs for senior citizens and the permanently disabled are available through the Three Wishes Inc. program at no cost to the recipient if they qualify.

The wheelchairs are provided to those who cannot walk and cannot self-propel a manual wheelchair in their home, and who meet the additional guidelines of the program. No deposit is required.

Rotaract Club seeking volunteers

The newly formed Rotaract Club of Pahrump is seeking volunteers. Rotaract is an international program of Rotary International for young professionals, ages 18 -30, who want to make a difference.

Rotaract clubs conduct meetings, usually every two weeks. Members use their weekends for service projects, social events and workshops. They work hard, but they believe in having a good time. Rotaractors hold barbecues, car rallies, camping trips, dances, cultural events and more.

There are 163,000 members in 7,088 Rotaract clubs in 151 countries.

Angels Have Wheels

All Medicare recipients should now be aware that if they suffer from conditions such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disorders, and have difficulty walking or propelling a standard wheelchair, they may be eligible to receive an electric wheelchair paid for by Medicare.
