Fishing Report
Fair fishing, pleasant weather and large crowds were found at the area over the Labor Day weekend. The holiday weekend combined with the opening of mourning dove hunting filled the campground. Anglers had fair success for rainbow trout that were up to 17 inches and a few largemouth bass were caught as well. Dove hunting was also fair as hunters averaged about seven birds. Water temperatures on the lakes are in the low 70s. Rainbow trout plants will take place from Mason Valley Hatchery when temperatures drop to the mid 60s, which will likely happen in several weeks. Very pleasant weather has arrived on the area with afternoon temperatures hitting the 80s while the evenings have been dropping into the low 40s. Afternoon winds have been experienced recently. EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR The campground was full over the holiday weekend and the anglers who were on hand had mixed results with some doing fairly well for stocked rainbow trout while others had little or no success. Temperatures have been pleasant with highs in the 80s while evenings have been in the 40s. ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR The water level continues to drop and fishing has been fair for stocked rainbow trout and small largemouth bass. Several crappie have appeared in the catch during the past week as well. LAKE MEAD There has been virtually no change in the fishing for more than a month as boaters are finding hot weather and good fishing for small striped bass in the Las Vegas Wash Arm and the Overton Arm, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife. The size of the stripers being caught picked up somewhat late last week for anglers who were fishing in the Las Vegas Wash area with more fish in the three-pound range being seen in the catch. One angler did well for stripers recently in the Las Vegas Wash Arm by chumming with corn and using cut anchovies for bait. Another boater who was downrigging caught several three-pound stripers and a number that were around two pounds. Jigging has been productive as well. The Lake Mead Marina continues to produce stripers, but most of the fish have been two pounds or less. Anglers who have been fishing off Hemenway Harbor have had slow fishing and most of the fish that they have caught recently have been thin. This year's threadfin shad spawn in the Overton Arm was the best that has ever been recorded by the wildlife department and this has given stripers the opportunity to gain weight as they feed on the tiny fish. The result has been healthy stripers and good fishing in that end of the lake. Boaters who have been fishing at Overton have enjoyed good action for stripers recently at Fish Island, Ann Marguret Cove and Salt Cove. Channel catfish are being caught in Las Vegas Wash and Fish Island by anglers who are using anchovies. LAKE MOHAVE Very good success was enjoyed at Willow Beach by the 35 anglers who were on hand for the rainbow trout plant last week. One angler reported to the department that he caught a limit of 10 trout in 20 minutes by casting a spinner. One large striped bass was seen breaking the lake's surface after the plant, but no stripers were caught. Striped bass fishing remains good around Cottonwood Cove, although most of the fish weigh a pound or less. Drifting anchovies and squid is the best method for catching the fish. URBAN PONDS The department will stock channel catfish Monday in ponds at Floyd Lamb State Park, Lorenzi Park and Sunset Park in Las Vegas and Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City. |
