Nye County commissioners appointed Capt. Gus Sullivan of the Nye County Sheriff's Office to succeed his father as Beatty's justice of the peace.

Commissioner Patricia Cox made the motion July 19, and the decision by the board to appoint Sullivan as elector to fill the un-expired term of his father until the next biennial election was unanimous.

Bill Sullivan died July 10 at 71. He had been Beatty's justice of the peace since 1979.

"You guys made the right choice but I'm losing my right arm," said Nye County Sheriff Tony DeMeo. "Now he outranks me," he added.

In two other appointments by the Board of Commissioners, Martha "Marti" Brubaker was named to fill the un-expired term of John Bass, who resigned from the Beatty Town Advisory Board. Brubaker has resided in Beatty since 1989 and is an administrative assistant.

John E. Terras of Tonopah was reappointed to another term on the Nye County Wildlife Management Board.
