Beatty receives Barrick landPVT Be-Be Adams, Barrick's manager of Community Relations and Government Affairs for North America, was on hand, along with local manager Brian Kump, to hand over the deed to the property, which includes more than 80 acres of land, six buildings with a total of some 40,000 square feet of floor space, and considerable utility infrastructure. Lamar Walters, chairman of the Beatty Town Advisory Board, presented the Barrick representatives with a plaque thanking the company for its support of the community, and County Commissioner Joni Eastley read a letter from Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., also recognizing Barrick's generosity and community spirit. The Beatty Economic Development Corporation hopes to attract clean, light industry to the site. Deed restrictions prevent it from being used for anything that would create pollution. The buildings have ample office space, and the largest building, which was used as a shop for huge mining equipment, would be ideal as a warehouse or manufacturing facility. The former gold mine is also one of only six sites chosen for a federal Brownfields pilot program. The program will provide training and technical assistance to help the community make beneficial economic use of the property. |
