Hunka, hunka burnin' trash

PVT

PHILLIP GOMEZ / PVT
The driver of a Pahrump Valley Disposal truck had to evacuate his load Saturday when he noticed it burning. Pahrump Fire-Rescue responded and put out the blaze, which had spread to nearby dry brush.

Garbage in a Pahrump Valley Disposal garbage-compactor truck caught fire Saturday afternoon after picking up a load of unidentified garbage somewhere near Mountain View Casino, forcing the driver to dump his load on the road and starting a brushfire that spread to about two acres.

Pahrump Valley Fire-Rescue responded to the fire at approximately 2 p.m. with several engines, extinguishing the brushfire and smoldering garbage in short order.

According to Ben Cruz, a Pahrump Valley Disposal mechanic on scene, the driver didn't notice smoke coming from his truck until returning from picking up more trash from apartment dumpsters located at the continuation of east Bourbon Street, a dirt road off Pahrump Valley Boulevard.

There, he used the compactor to dump several piles of burning refuse in the middle of the road leading all the way up to the road's intersection with Pahrump Valley Boulevard.

Dry brush mostly to the north on undeveloped lots caught fire and burned. Cruz said that some hydraulic hoses on the truck were damaged.
