Crime victim funding available

PVT

Gov. Kenny Guinn announced Thursday that Nevada's Victim of Crime Program has received $1,685,000 in federal grant funding. This is the fifth year Nevada has received federal funding from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The program, administered through the Justice's Office for Victims of Crime, assists innocent victims of crime with medical bills, counseling, funeral costs, lost wages and other forms of aid to all persons criminally victimized in the state.

"This grant money is a critical component in helping to ease the suffering for those who have been traumatized by criminal acts," Guinn said. "We cannot completely erase the trauma of a violent crime, but the existence of the Victims of Crime Program shows the citizens of Nevada that there are a multitude of resources available to them in the wake of violent crime. This program can often be the first step in helping our victims of violent crime down the road to recovery and a return to normalcy."

The federal Office for Victims of Crime isn't funded by taxpayers. Funding is received through criminal fees, penalty assessments, bond forfeitures, restitution and an assessment of criminal wages in prison.

Any victim of crime in the state, dependent of a victim, or person legally acting on behalf of a victim, can apply for assistance through the Victims of Crime Program, up to one year after the crime. For more information, call 702-486-2740, or visit the Las Vegas office at 2200 S. Ranch Drive, Suite No. 130.
