Anniversary
Edward D. Sharp and Norma K. Smolin were married on May 28, 1955 in War Acres, Okla. T/Sgt. Sharp was assigned to the Air Force Reserve Center at Will Rogers Field, Okla., and had returned recently from an assignment in the Far East. Norma was employed at the telephone company in Chicago. They had been writing each other for 18 months and decided to get married. Norma flew in from Chicago and Ed made arrangements with his commander and to comply with the Air Force and the state. After this hurried arrangement, the couple will celebrate 50 years together on Saturday. Norma soon learned about being a service wife and traveled with her sergeant around the country and overseas while the couple raised three children. Ed retired from the Air Force in 1968 and took a position as a department head at Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Ore. He later took a position as Material Manager at the Shrine Hospital in Portland, where he retired in 1992. They searched for a retirement home and finally settled in Pahrump on Labor Day in 1992. Ed served on the Hospital District Board for six years and as a member of the board of directors of the Pahrump Senior Center for about six years. Norma worked as a civil service employee while they were in the service and worked at other office jobs after retirement to civilian life. They will celebrate with their children Donna, who came in from California, and John, who came in from Oregon, at their home in Pahrump. |
