Nye sales tax revenues spike

Ultraconservative budget projections formulated by County Manager Michael Maher combined with a dramatic spike in sales tax revenue generated in Nye County could ease funding woes - and allow Sheriff Tony DeMeo and other top officials to maintain the status quo.

SOB ordinance target of lawsuit

The Adult Superstore, a subsidiary of Media Shops Inc., a Nevada corporation, has legally challenged Nye County's recently passed sexually oriented business ordinance as unconstitutional. The controversial ordinance was passed by the Nye County Board of Commissioners last February despite warnings from The Superstore attorney that it was "too general and ambiguous" and constituted "over-restrictive regulation."

   
Republican Women fashion show a big hit
The Pahrump Valley Republican Women raised $5,000 at their well-attended fashion show and luncheon, held Saturday at the Pahrump Nugget Steak House. Programs such as the mammogram van, senior center baskets and youth scholarships will benefit from the proceeds raised from sponsorships by local companies and raffle ticket sales of donated items.

Garbage in a Pahrump Valley Disposal garbage-compactor truck caught fire Saturday afternoon after picking up a load of unidentified garbage somewhere near Mountain View Casino, forcing the driver to dump his load on the road and starting a brushfire that spread to about two acres.
