Students in the News
Pahrump Valley High School students Analyn Gourley and Raymond Martinez were two of 26 Nevada high school seniors to be awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Burger King/ McLamore Foundation's sixth annual Burger King Scholars Program. High school seniors from around the country, Puerto Rico and Canada are eligible for the scholarships, which are based on academic achievement, work experience, financial need, co-curricular activities and community service. The scholarships are awarded to help offset the cost of attending college or a post-secondary vocational or technical school. Franchise and company-owned Burger King(r) restaurants take it upon themselves to host a variety of fundraising activities in order to generate the money needed to fund the scholarships. Shelbie Williams Rosemary Clarke Middle School student, Shelbie Williams, has been accepted into the People to People World Leadership Forum to be held Oct. 17-12 in Washington, D.C. As part of a select group of students, Williams will earn high school credit while studying leadership and exploring some of the most prominent institutions and monuments in the United States. Williams and the other forum delegates will examine the characteristics of American leadership during times of national challenge and prosperity. Delegates will also participate in small group discussions and exercises that will give them first-hand experience in how successful leaders develop strategies, make decisions, build consensus and foster change. Williams was nominated and accepted for the honor based on outstanding academic merit, civic involvement and leadership potential. The forum is coordinated by People to People Student Ambassador Programs to fulfill Dwight D. Eisenhower's vision of fostering world citizenship when he founded People to People during his presidency in 1956. |
