Beatty board supports 'Devil's Canyon' film

By RICHARD STEPHENS
PVT

The Beatty Town Advisory Board quickly moved through a number of agenda items at its May 11 meeting.

Members voted to send a letter supporting the filming of a motion picture titled "Devil's Canyon" in and around Beatty July 13-17. The production company regarding the filming had reportedly already contacted the sheriff's office. Board member Kay Handy commented that if it was OK with the sheriff's department, it was OK with her.

Nobody knows for certain if there's a connection, but Martin Sheen and his son Charlie, stars of the TV hits "West Wing" and "Two-and-a-Half Men" were spotted around Beatty over the weekend scouting for movie locales.

In other Beatty Town Board news:

• The board agreed to lend the town's portable audio equipment to the fire department for use during 4th of July events at the park. This will give the fire department and the Beatty General Improvement District a chance to assess its performance to determine if such components will be adequate for their own needs before purchasing equipment of their own.

Bert Bertram, who had supplied technical expertise in the town's purchase process, said that it should be plenty adequate. He said it is rated to handle an outdoor audience of 4,000-5,000 people.

• The town will send out a bulk mailing from the Beatty TV District to determine how many residents get their only television reception from the town's translators.

The equipment, now outdated, is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive to maintain, and the relay stations between Beatty and Las Vegas more and more unreliable.

With the availability of cable and satellite, the town is wondering if it is worth the expense to keep the translator system.

• Commissioner Joni Eastley asked the board's approval to withdraw the item of appointing a member to the town board from the next county commission agenda.

She said there seemed to be discrepancies between the board's procedures, its rules, and the Nevada Revised Statutes.

Eastley said that NRS may require that potential appointees first be chosen in an unofficial election. She also said that it may be that all board members would have to be approved in a yearly unofficial election.

• Eastley reported that work is about to begin on chip sealing of the Beatty Airport runway. This is being done with FAA grant money. She also said that the county received $400,000 of $950,000 given to the state for assessment of lands contaminated with hazardous materials or petroleum. She also once more apologized for the frustrating lack of action by the district attorney's office on the condemnation of public nuisance properties in Beatty.

• The board considered two bids for cleanup work at the Beatty Cemetery and awarded the job to Carmelo Mendoza, whose bid was a straight $1,000.

The other bid initially stated that the final amount would be between $500 and $1,000, but also said that two people were to receive $10.00 per hour each for a minimum of 50 hours, which the board interpreted as equivalent to the same $1,000 total.
