EMS Week May 15-21

By BREANNE HUBBARD
PVT

Emergency Medical Services Week, celebrated throughout the U.S., will be observed in Pahrump for the first time.

At the Pahrump Town Board meeting Tuesday night, the Pahrump Valley Fire-Rescue Advisory Board asked for permission to proclaim May 15-21 as EMS Week.

Paula Glidden, chairwoman of the advisory board, brought a certificate of proclamation for the board to approve and sign. Glidden said she thought recognizing the week would be a good idea. "This is a national week where everyone honors the EMS services," she said.

Glidden also thought it was very important to recognize the employees of Pahrump Valley Fire-Rescue for their daily efforts, and what better way to do so than devoting an entire week to them.

Board member Paul Willis made a motion to approve EMS Week, with a second by Laurayne Murray. The vote passed 3-0. Ed Bishop was absent from the meeting as he continues to battle illness.

According to the American College of Emergency Physicians, EMS Week brings together local communities and medical personnel in order to publicize safety, as well as honor those in the field. American College is also one of the sponsors for EMS Week.

Fire Chief Scott Lewis said he's thrilled about the new recognition in town. "On behalf of Pahrump Valley Fire-Rescue, I proudly accept the proclamation recognizing EMS Appreciation Week. Our EMS work extremely hard for this community," he said.

In 2004, Fire-Rescue received 5,561 EMS calls. There were 5,733 calls in 2003.

Lewis also thanked the advisory board and the town board for proclaiming the week. He knew the advisory board had discussed the recognition, but it was still a pleasant surprise as he stood in the back of the Bob Ruud Community Center during the approval.

Lewis and the rest of his crew hope in the future to plan events during the designated week in order to involve the public on a fuller scale.
