Commissioners busy with two meetings
By DOUG McMURDO Monday's meeting will be held to discuss various budgets beginning at 10 a.m. The public hearing will address the tentative Nye County budget as well as the final budgets for the county, the Pahrump Community Hospital District, the Amargosa Valley Advisory Board, the Beatty General Improvement District, the Beatty Town Advisory Board, the Gabbs Town Advisory Board, and the Manhattan Advisory Board. In another timed item scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on Tuesday commissioners will hear a presentation and review and possibly accept its Brownfields Program Reports; namely the preliminary re-use plan for the Calvada Eye as well as a draft final report to the Environmental Protection Agency on Nye County's Brownfields grant program accomplishments. Also on tap for Monday: Commissioners could agree to accept roughly $60,000 from the Nevada Law Enforcement Terrorism Prevention grant; Nye County is not required to provide matching funds. In another homeland security issue, commissioners could agree to accept an additional grant in the amount of roughly $177,500; again, no matching funds will be required. A contract between Nye County and Dr. Rexene Worrell for autopsy services will likely be ratified. Several items could be declared as "excess equipment" and sold at auction. Among the items listed are five older-model graders. Janitorial contracts to maintain various county facilities will be discussed insofar as a request for proposals will be sent out to prospective cleaning companies. Marie Owens in a formality will be named as the county's comptroller who has replaced Charlie Rodewald following his resignation. Commissioners could decide to award a contract for well drilling construction as part of the county's Early Warning Drilling Program designed to monitor groundwater flow paths at the Nevada Test Site and the Yucca Mountain project. Planning issues, particularly as they pertain to Pahrump, dominate Tuesday's agenda. Zone change requests ranging from properties of less than one acre to 38 acres will be discussed. All zone change applicants, according to the agenda, conform to the Pahrump Regional Planning District Master Plan. There are also several proposed master plan amendments on the docket, including a request from contractor Sam Woods, who hopes to build a low-density subdivision at Leslie Street and Gamebird Road. There are a number of other planning-related matters that commissioners will debate. |
