1-A BASEBALL

Beatty runs win streak to 7 games

PVT

And the hits keep on coming...

The Beatty High School baseball team ripped 13, including three triples, as the Hornets ripped visiting Las Vegas Mountain View 21-2 in a Southern Nevada Class A League game Tuesday.

The victory was the seventh straight by the 10-run mercy rule for the Hornets.

Eight hits, including two-run triples by Laric Tolleson and Andy Villanueva, came in the third inning, when the Hornets exploded for 16 runs. Matt Everts added a two-RBI single for the Hornets, who moved to 17-4 in all games, 5-2 in the league. (That all-games record is a correction from a previous report).

Genaro Femat had a two-run single in the second inning, when the Hornets took the lead for good. In the fourth, Jesus Moreno and Tony Heilman had run-scoring singles.

Tolleson finished 3-for-4 with five runs batted in. Clay Gerling, the winning pitcher, was 2-for-2 with a double, triple and a RBI.

Edgard Maldonado was 2-for-4 and Matt Everts was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.

Mario Roman was hitless, but added a RBI.

Gerling worked five innings, striking out eight, but hitting four batters. He allowed two hits and an earned run.

"Clay had some control problems at first, but once we scored some runs for him, he settled down and his stuff was unhittable," said Brian Hayes, the Beatty coach. "We pounded out 13 hits; it seems like everyone is seeing the ball well and hitting it hard somewhere.

"Our goal is to finish up the season with three more wins and go into the playoffs on a 10-game winning streak."

The double-elimination Southern playoffs are May 12-13 at Mountain View, with the state tournament May 20-21 at Mesquite.

The Hornets play at home today against Las Vegas Trinity, starting at 1 p.m.

€ In fast-pitch softball, Beatty lost 12-3 to Lake Mead Christian Academy and 16-6 to Las Vegas Mountain View. The Lady Hornets are to play at home against Trinity today.
