Manse Elementary hosts eighth annual science fair
By BREANNE HUBBARD Manse Elementary School will hold its eighth annual science fair next week for all grades to discover and present their determinations - and all in search of an award. Kindergarteners through second grade are allowed to do demonstration or experimental projects. Third through fifth grade students will only do experimental projects. The setup for the fair will start Tuesday in the school's multipurpose building and judging will begin Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon. Misa Carlson and Christine Richardson, both third grade science teachers at Manse, are this year's coordinators. Richardson has been a part of the science fair every year. "(Richardson)'s the main honcho," Carlson said. Students in designated grades are given the option to participate in the fair. The third grade students, however, are required to participate, Carlson said. Her students are given class time to put together their projects, but most of it is done at home. She said the project should be almost complete for her students, who should be editing the final draft. "It's time consuming," Carlson said. Last year, the school had a large turnout participate in the event. "Hopefully it's as good as it was last year," Carlson said. Last year had an estimated 250-plus entries. Students will be judged on an 85-point rubric system. Judges have been recruited from schools around Pahrump, including the high school. During the judging period, students will offer a three-minute presentation to the judge. Ribbons will be given out for first place winners. Pens, pencils and a special ribbon will be given out to all participants. Awards will be broken up by grade level. The fair also provides an opportunity for parents to see what their children are accomplishing. From 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, parents are invited to visit the multipurpose room and look over their student's work. Last year, Carlson remembers a number of projects that caught her eye. "I really don't have a favorite," she said. "We enjoy all of them," she said. |
