Commissioners' agenda loaded with various topics

By PHILLIP GOMEZ
PVT

A mishmash of planning, permitting, purchasing, petition and public works hiring decisions await the Nye County commission when it meets next Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. at the Bob Ruud Community Center in Pahrump.

Among the items listed under public works:

• Possible decision on approval to hire a total of nine summer employees for temporary road maintenance work in Amargosa Valley, Pahrump and Tonopah. The amount budgeted is $40,000.

• Possible decision to go to bid for the annual chip-seal and slurry-seal contracts. The contracted costs are $800,000 and $250,000, respectively.

• Possible decision on a petition from local residents on Blagg Road to reduce the speed limit between Calvada Boulevard and State Route 372 from 45 mph to 35 mph.

• Possible decision concerning the establishment of a list of potential professional service providers for engineering review and inspection services for public improvement works and land development activities.

• Possible decision to authorize the use of a professional recruiter to obtain a senior engineer for public works.

The sheriff's office has requested a decision on a request from a wholesale and retail fireworks dealer for a permit. The applicant is doing business as Area 51 fireworks.

Under "Consent Agenda," the commission will consider the following:

• Approval to purchase an Ingersoll Rand trailer-mounted generator to support the Independent Scientific Investigations Program. The budgeted amount is $23,000.

• Approval of a lease renewal with Wulfenstein Development LLC for 4,800 square feet of office space for the Department of Natural Resources and Federal Facilities. The annual lease has been $55,560 in the past.

• Approval to enter into an agreement with Leadsonline to assist in locating and recovering stolen property. The annual cost of the service is budgeted at $7,788.

A timed agenda item for 9:30 a.m. concerns complaints filed with the Nye County clerk alleging the existence of certain nuisances in Round Mountain.

At 11 a.m. another agenda item concerns an ordinance authorizing the issuance of a general obligation (limited tax) bond. The action would ratify previously acted upon measures by the commission.

Planning items consist of numerous recently heard Regional Planning Commission zone change applications, master plan amendments and related applications as well as a few new ones.

Additionally, there is a proposed text amendment to the county's adopted master plan that would add a description to the land-use category "Brothel." Attorney John Field is the representative of the applicant, Mid-Valley Enterprises. If approved, the changes requested would allow the brothel owner to develop an array of permissive commercial uses.

The Commission will also consider and possibly decide on declaring a scrivener error for all properties located adjacent to the south side of Bell Vista Avenue, between Barney Street and Woodchips Road. The error in question is that the properties fronting Bell Vista are shown on the county's master plan as low density residential, but are generally being used as "Mixed Use."
