PREP FOOTBALL No. 2 Moapa visits PVHS
By DON McDERMOTT Pahrump Valley is 95-178-1 six games into its 32nd season of high school football. The Trojans started playing interscholastic football in 1973, with Hawk Wohle as their coach. The team finished 0-8 and was outscored 348-20. One of the losses inflicted that season was by Moapa Valley, 62-0. Including that game, the Trojans are 3-29 against the Pirates. Pahrump Valley's last victory was 17-6 in 1994. Moapa Valley has 11 consecutive wins against the Trojans, 4-2 in all games, 1-1 in the league this season. Steve Nygaard knows how strong the Pirates are, advising, "Moapa Valley is the best 3-A team in Nevada." The Pirates, 6-1, 2-0 league, feature the passing and field leadership of quarterback Jeff Bowler and the all-around versatility of Zac Davis. The coach of the Trojans, Nygard has already seen Spring Creek, considered one of the best teams from the Northern Nevada Class 3-A League, and Mesquite Virgin Valley from the Southern League. The Trojans lost 30-22 to Spring Creek and 24-12 to Virgin Valley; those are the only setbacks for Pahrump Valley this season. Let's take this historical perspective further. The Trojans are 11-74-1 against current Southern 3-A League members. They are 5-25 against Mesquite Virgin Valley, and 3-18 against Boulder City, which visits Oct. 28 to close the regular season. PVHS is 3-2-1 against Las Vegas Faith Lutheran, including the Trojans' 28-20 victory three weeks ago. Including games this season, Pahrump Valley is 0-3 against Spring Creek; the first two games against that Northern Nevada Class 3-A League team were in 1998 and 1999. Against Lincoln County, the Trojans are 9-7, including a 63-6 win this season. Games against Canyon Springs, Spring Valley and Del Sol are first-time meetings, since they are first-year Las Vegas schools. Pahrump Valley has had exceptional success against new Las Vegas high school teams. The Trojans stopped Canyon Springs 43-14 and Spring Valley 36-6 this season, with Del Sol visiting Oct. 22 for the annual Homecoming game. The Trojans beat Henderson Coronado and Las Vegas Sierra Vista in their inaugural seasons (2001) and Shadow Ridge and Liberty in 2003. Pahrump Valley is 14-12 against Nye County rival Tonopah and 2-3 against Beatty; the Trojans have not played Gabbs (which does not have football this season) and Round Mountain. The Trojans are 1-0 vs. Pahranagat Valley Alamo, 4-0 vs. Spring Mountain, 5-0 vs. Laughlin (including a record 65-0 victory in 1993), and 7-12 against Ely White Pine. The Meadows, not on the 2004 schedule, is 3-3 against Pahrump Valley. Against Indian Springs, Pahrump Valley is 12-8. Against Northern Nevada teams, the Trojans are 5-14, including 1-3 vs. Zephyr Cove Whittell, 0-1 vs. Pershing County (playoff), 0-1 vs. North Tahoe (playoff), 1-4 vs. Yerington Rite of Passage, 1-2 vs. Battle Mountain, 0-3 vs. Spring Creek and 1-0 vs. Mineral County Hawthorne. The Trojans are 0-3 against Utah schools Milford (0-2) and Hurricane (0-1), 0-2 vs. Arizona rival Parker, and 9-21 in games against California teams. They are 2-2 vs. Lucerne Valley, 0-2 vs. Mammoth Lake, 3-9 vs. Trona and 4-8 vs. Needles. Mouat, Canada, defeated Pahrump Valley 31-7 in the 1996 season. Al Giannotti, who retired from PVHS in 2001, is the career record holder for wins by a coach. His teams were 29-21 from 1976 through 1981. Giannotti's 1978 team was 9-1, with the only loss 18-0 to Pershing County in the playoffs. That 9-0 start is the best in PVHS football history. In playoff games, PVHS is 1-5; its lone win was a 3-0 conquest of Moapa Valley in 1978. The losses were 18-0 to Pershing County in 1978; 12-6 to Moapa Valley in 1980; 41-7 to North Tahoe in 1993; 44-21 to Virgin Valley in 2001 and 38-0 to Moapa Valley in 2003. Wohle was 0-8 in his only season as the Trojans' coach. Richard Travis was 2-16 in 1974-75 and Dave Hare, who succeeded Giannotti, was 7-18 from 1982 through 1984. Larry Goins, now the athletics director and boys golf coach at Sierra Vista, was 19-48-1 from 1985 through 1992. Gary Findley was the coach from 1993 through 1997, winning 20 of 46 games. His 1993 team, 7-2 in the regular season, lost 41-7 to North Tahoe in the playoffs. Scott Dean was 0-9 in 1998, while Jeff Skelton was 5-12 in the 1999 and 2000 seasons. Present-day coach Steve Nygaard is 13-20, including eight wins in his last 15 starts. These statistics were provided by Charles Hurley, the athletics director at Mesquite Virgin Valley, who compiled records for all of Nevada's high school football teams as part of a college thesis. |
