USDA announces new program

PVT

The United States Department of Agriculture recently announced a new pilot program to help educate community and faith-based organizations on the Rural Development Community Facilities Guaranteed Loan Program and unite them to neighborhood lending institutions.

The program allows lenders to finance and facilitate important community services including health care clinics, schools, childcare centers and police and fire stations to communities that have a population of 20,000 or less. USDA offers lenders a guarantee of up to 90 percent of the total loan amount through this program. The average loan guarantee in fiscal year 2003 was $1.6 million with a span ranging from $55,000 to $22.5 million.

The USDA, under the direction of Las Vegas Area Director Kay Vernatter and Carson City Area Director Angilla Denton, has scheduled workshops across the state to help community and faith-based organizations get the information they need regarding available resources - including federal resources - to increase their ability to serve their communities. USDA's faith-based and community initiatives website, http://www.usda.gov/fbci, outlines the best opportunities for federal assistance to nonprofits.

A workshop has been scheduled in Pahrump from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday in room B of the Bob Ruud Community Center. There is no cost for the workshop, but reservations are recommended. Call Kara Blake, USDA Rural Development area assistant, at 702-262-9047, ext. 101.
