Beatty makes the 'A' list

By RICHARD STEPHENS
PVT

Several projects of benefit to Beatty emerged on the Payments Equal to Taxes "A" list after the recent county budget workshop, according to Commissioner Joni Eastley.

Eastley gave the news to the Beatty Town Advisory Board at its May 12 meeting. One of the proposals recommended for funding is phase one of a project to make use of a water tank at the Barrick Bullfrog Mine site.

This would include lining the tank to meet standards for potable water and building a pipeline to connect it to an existing town line.

Other phases of that project that would extend lines to provide water to the airport and for a proposed industrial park were put on the 'B' list because it was unclear whether they could be completed within the same fiscal year.

Eastley said that the county would seek input from Beatty Water and Sanitation District Manager Jim Weeks on the timeline issue.

Other Beatty area projects that made the A list included money for the museum and for Beatty's upcoming centennial celebration, and $25,000 to fund an architectural survey needed for restoration and preservation of the Rhyolite Depot.

Eastley said she was concerned with the preservation of Rhyolite, a tourist attraction that brings business to the community. She said that, despite the presence of caretakers, there is a vandalism problem at Rhyolite, including damage that was done to the depot and to the bottle house as recently as last weekend.

The commissioner said that she is scheduled to be a speaker at an upcoming Brownfields conference in Reno. She said she was "sworn to secrecy," but there would be an announcement made there to the national media that will be "good news for Beatty."

After Eastley's report, the board swiftly moved through the few items on the agenda.

• They voted to support the county in seeking an incidental take 10(a) permit for desert tortoise. This had been recommended by Dr. James Marble as a means of lessening the economic impact of the Endangered Species Act on local property owners and developers.

• The board also approved payment of roughly $15,000 to the Nevada Department of Transportation, the amount of overage on the cost of recently installed sidewalk along Highway 95.

• Bert Bertram presented specifications for the installation of theater curtains in the Beatty Community Center, and the board will send them to two companies that formerly bid on the project. He praised the work of the two companies, S&K and 4 Walls Entertainment, in coming to Beatty and drawing up proposals, which were both solid but that included differing materials and configurations. Now both will have the opportunity to compete "apples versus apples," said Bertram.

Firefighter Mike Lasorsa said the fire department, having repeatedly tried to get action from the district attorney's office, has decided to proceed on its own with filing a public nuisance complaint against certain abandoned properties previously identified as posing a danger to the public, particularly to children.
