BLM, veterans differ over legion post spot

PVT WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON - The Bureau of Land Management has no problem making available surplus federal land for an American Legion post in Pahrump but wants local veterans to pick a different plot; a Senate committee was told on Wednesday.

The parcel being eyed by veterans two and half miles southeast of downtown Pahrump on Highway 160 has not been designated for disposal, an agency official said.

"The BLM would like to work with the committee and American Legion Post 22 to identify an alternate site," deputy assistant director Bob Anderson told the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

Senators were considering a bill by Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., giving five acres of BLM land for the veterans post. Reid said it would allow the American Legion to move forward with construction to accommodate a rapidly growing veterans' community.

In a telephone interview, Post Adjutant Paul Bohn said the legion has been frustrated for eight years trying to find a suitable site for a building, a memorial park and a veterans' garden in Pahrump.

"One of the main reasons it's been so frustrating is we've seen the BLM give hundreds of acres of land to other people, and we've been waiting this long for just 5 acres," Bohn said.

The American Legion currently uses the Veterans of Foreign Wars building on Homestead Road.

Bohn said the American Legion post would be made available to other organizations and the legion would pay all costs for the land transfer.
