Republicans file early, often
By MARK WAITE All county commission candidates filed as Republicans. The primary is scheduled for Sept. 7. First-term incumbent Henry Neth filed for another four-year term for District III. He will face opposition from Pahrump Regional Planning Commission member Paula Elefante and former Pahrump Town Board member Gary Hollis. The District I race is also a crowded field, with former Pahrump Town Board member Tim Leavitt running against Marquis Atkinson, who ran for district V county commissioner in 2002, and Aubrey "Butch" Pierce. All the candidates for the District I and District III seats are from Pahrump, except Pierce, who is from Gabbs. District I incumbent Roberta "Midge" Carver, who was appointed by Gov. Kenny Guinn to replace her late husband Dick Carver in 2002, hasn't filed yet for a full term. District II incumbent Joni Eastley, of Tonopah, filed for another term. She is currently unopposed. District I includes a large area from Round Mountain, Gabbs and Duckwater, down to the east side of Pahrump Valley. The district includes areas of Pahrump east of Linda Street as far as Irene Street, then roughly east of a line equal to Homestead Road as far south as Heritage Drive. District II includes Tonopah, Beatty and Amargosa Valley, taking in the northwest part of Pahrump Valley roughly north of Bell Vista Avenue and west of Linda Street. Two candidates have already filed for Nye County School Board Area IV: Tracie Ward, who was appointed to the board in 2002 after Elizabeth "Betsy" Kelley resigned, and John Sutherland Espana. No one has yet filed as of press time for the other two school board positions: the Area II seat currently held by Nancy Sollinger and the Area VI seat held by Melanie Reiner. The filing period ends at 5 p.m. May 14. |
