TONOPAH - Nye County Commissioner Joni Eastley immediately moved to deny Sheriff Tony DeMeo's request to reroute 911 calls and radio communications from the northern dispatch to Pahrump. Commissioner Midge Carver seconded the motion before lengthy and volatile discussion ensued.

Developing economic issues
TONOPAH - Nye County commissioners considered several economic development issues at Tuesday's meeting, including advertising for requests for qualifications for an economic development director. The commission voted unanimously to approve the RFQ for the director position.

Private landfill push is on
TONOPAH - Nye County Commission Chairman Henry Neth expressed extreme disgust over the length of time it has taken to privatize landfills at Tuesday's meeting. He opened discussion by reminding the board the county had approved privatization and was supposed to contract with Pahrump Valley Disposal in February of 2003, with the understanding privatization would save the county hundreds of thousands of dollars.

County at $5.5 million deficit
TONOPAH - Nye County commissioners began a three-day session to finalize the county's tentative budget for fiscal year 2004-2005 in Tonopah Tuesday and were faced with a $5.5 million shortfall of expected revenues over proposed expenses.

Flower prices up this week - but don't blame retailers
While flowers cost more this week than last, it's not necessarily the retailers hiking the price. According to Terria Dopita at Pahrump Florist, wholesalers raise prices during holidays. This year, part of the increase is due to high gas prices increasing the cost of delivering fresh flowers to retail shops.

Nevada Public Radio adds two stations
If you're like most people your radio is programmed so you can punch in your favorite stations without having to twist a dial or watch the digitized readout. That means you may not have noticed that Pahrump gained two additional FM radio stations about six months ago, thanks to Nevada Public Radio.
