COLLEGE FOOTBALL Nevada on road; plays WAC's Rice
A win can keep Nevada's title hopes alive and push the Wolf Pack closer to a bowl berth. The Pack is 5-3 in all games, 3-1 in the WAC. Rice is 1-6, 1-2 WAC. Nevada leads the series, 2-1, with the Pack winning last year in Reno, 31-21 and earning a 34-28 decision in 2000. Two years ago in Houston, the Pack lost in overtime, 33-30. Nevada coach Chris Tormey is 2-1 against Rice and coach Ken Hatfield. The Pack couldn't hold a first half lead and gave up 29 second half points in losing to Louisiana Tech, 42-34. Quarterback Andy Heiser threw for a career-best 315 yards, Tonopah High product Chance Kretschmer rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown, and Tim Fleming had four catches for a career-high 125 yards, but the Pack couldn't hold off Tech in the final 30 minutes. Kretschmer, who ranks 19th in NCAA Division I-A rushing with 106 yards per game, has been added to the Doak Walker Award list. The award goes to the top running back in the nation. Nevada returns home to play Fresno State in a 12:05 p.m. PDT game at Mackay Stadium Nov. 8. Hawaii will play in Reno Nov. 15, with a 12:05 p.m. starting time. |
