Ron Cross and Steven Foster of Pahrump teamed to finish 12th in a Tournament of Champions Regional Fishing tournament last weekend at Lake Mead.

Cross, who runs Shadow Mountain Feed, and Foster, a chiropractor, pocketed $300 each for their efforts, but most important, they qualified for the Ultimate Challenge, a major tournament to be contested at a site to be announced in April 2004.

By finishing 12th, the Cross-Foster duo qualified by placing in the top 15. Their catch was four fish, weighing in at 5.73 pounds.

"When we go to the Ultimate Challenge, we will be going after the first prize - two $35,000 bass fishing boats," said Foster, who has been a teammate with Cross for "a couple years."

Previous regional tournaments were contested in Guntersville, Ala.; on Lake Erie; at Tablerock Lake in Missouri and on Sam Rayburn Lake in Texas. The top three payoffs were $5,000, $2,500 and $1,000.

The Ultimate Challenge will be televised on ESPN, said Cross. The tournament was created in 1984 as a promotion by Champion Boats.

The Pahrump team has or will compete in tournaments at Lake Pleasant and Lake Havasu in Arizona; Clear Lake in California, as well as Lake Mead.
