Riley Hunt runs for Beatty, in the Hornets 52-6 Southern Class A League football loss to visiting Pahranagat Valley Alamo Friday. The Hornets play at Mountain View against Lake Mead Christian Academy at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The Beatty High School football team travels to Mountain View High School in Las Vegas Saturday to play Lake Mead Christian Academy in its final Southern Nevada Class A League game of the season.

Kickoff is at 10 a.m.

The Beatty volleyball team, still hopeful of a No. 1 seed in the Southern Class A playoffs, will play at Lake Mead Christian Academy, starting at Noon.

Bruce Moen, the Hornets football coach, is still upbeat, as are his players.

"This is our last game, but our kids are still pumped up," said Moen, after Beatty had lost its 17th consecutive game. The Hornets last win was a 20-14 conquest of Spring Mountain in 2001. "They are still rarin' to go. We still have 16 kids out."

One of the major concerns for Moen this fall was the lack of freshmen players. Not one competed, "but I have been told that 10 boys who will be freshmen and sophomores will come out for the team next yer," said Moen.

"Probably the main reason these kids didn't play this year was the pay-to-participate policy," said Moen. Each boy or girl who wanted to play interscholastic sports this year was to be assessed $150; that money was to help the Nye County School District offset a $1.9 million deficit. That policy was eventually rescinded, but it was too late for more boys to become eligible to play this fall.

"With 25 or 30 boys playing next year, we can go into the season with a lot more optimism," said Moen.

The major problem facing the Hornets in 2004 is which league will they be a member.

"Pahranagat Valley wants the bigger schools in Class A to start playing nine-man football, while Alamo remains at eight," said Moen. "I am not sure how that would work out for us."

Alamo defeated Beatty 52-6 in a league game Friday. The Hornets fell to 0-6 in the league, 0-7 in all games. Genaro Femat scored the only touchdown for the Hornets.
