By DON McDERMOTTPAHRUMP VALLEY SECOND IN OWN TOURNAMENT Lady Trojans will remember AlamoPAHRANAGAT VALLEY WINS VOLLEYBALL TITLEPVT "I thought we played really well," said Harris, after the Lady Trojans had fallen 25-22, 25-21 to Pahranagat Valley Alamo in the Gold Division Championship finals Saturday night. The Trojans finished 7-2, with both losses to Alamo, which had beaten them 25-18, 25-20 in Pool B action Friday. "Pahranagat Valley was clearly the best team in this tournament," said Harris of the Panthers, who went 8-0 and were rarely threatened in the two-day spikers marathon contested in the Pahrump Valley High School and Rosemary Clarke Middle School gyms. "The girls stepped it up," said Harris, whose team is now 12-5 in all matches this season. The Trojans played at Las Vegas Faith Lutheran Tuesday and will be at home against Bullhead City, Ariz., Mohave Saturday (3 p.m.). "They got a lot of experience in this tournament. I thought we played better than expected." And gaining game experience is what the Trojans need, since only three starters are back off the 2002 team that lost in four games to Overton Moapa Valley in the finals of the Nevada Class 3-a state tournament. Junior outside hitter Veronica Villa, backrow player Amanda Kunzi, and front row veteran Breann Kukurin were starters in 2002. Harris has Jessica Beatty back, but her varsity play in 2002 was limited. Freshman setter Angelica Villa made enough of an impression with her steady performances to be named to the all-tournament team, along with her sister, Veronica. Kaila Tappe, a junior who was on the junior varsity team last season, workd well in the front row. Alyssa West came in as a substitute to serve and play in the back row and Jenny Mills played both in the back row and as an outside hitter. The Trojans were 2-1 in Pool B games Friday, with victories against Tonopah (25-9, 25-11) and Round Mountain (25-12, 25-14) and the loss to Alamo. In Gold Division Pool B action Saturday, Pahrump Valley held off Las Vegas Sierra Vista 26-24, 25-18; previously undefeated Las Vegas Faith Lutheran 25-20, 21-25, 16-14 and Southern Nevada Class 3-A League rival Boulder City 25-11, 25-14 to advance into the championship bracket semifinals. The Trojans held off long-time nemesis Las Vegas The Meadows 18-25, 25-10, 15-11 to advance to the title match against Alamo. The Panthers, Nevada's Class A state champions, were led to victory by all-tournament team selections Angie Higbee, Kathy Higbee and Kalee Whipple. In Game One of the finals, the Trojans and Panthers took turns taking command. It was tied at 17, 18, 19 and 20 before Alamo scored five of the last six points, including a game-winning kill by Kathy Higbee. Angie Higbee's kill gave Alamo a 1-0 lead in Game Two and the Panthers led by as many as seven points before the Trojans put on a brief flurry. Down 19-13, the Trojans scored nine of the next 14 points to close to 24-22, but Angie Higbee made it game, set and match with a kill for the 25th point. "Alamo plays the same way Moapa Valley does," said Harris. Which means the Panthers have the big, strong front-row hitters and blockers and backrow players which are defensive specialists or are precise setters who get the ball to the big hitters. Moapa Valley, out of the Southern Nevada Class 3-Aleague, will be going after its 13th consecutive state championship this season.
