Beatty gets $10,000 for toads

The town of Beatty will receive a $10,000 grant from the United States Forest Service for the continuing development of a trail system to protect the Amargosa Toad and other threatened species in Beatty and the Oasis Valley.

"I was pleased that we were able to facilitate the Rural Community Assistance Grant for the Beatty Habitat Trail System and happy the project was approved," said Spring Mountain District Ranger Steve Holdsambeck in a recent news release. "My staff and I have watched the habitat trail project develop and know the potential its success has to improve the quality of life for local residents. The project will also provide an opportunity to attract more tourists to the area."

Rural Community Assistance grants help build stronger, more diverse and resilient economies in communities that historically have relied on natural resource-based economies.

The grants can be applied for by communities, counties and American Indian tribes to develop plans, conduct feasibility studies, create or enhance outdoor recreation and tourism, improve living conditions, enhance natural resources, explore economic ventures, and develop alternative forest products.

For more information or questions regarding future grant opportunities, contact Holdsambeck at 702-515-5401 or Rural Community Assistance Coordinator Tom Baker at 355-5308. Information pertaining to this year's grants can be found on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest website at www.fs.fed.us/htnf.
