Brandon Barrett keeps family tradition going
Spring Creek 119-pounder shooting for second crown

After winning three state high school wrestling championships in the state of Montana at the end of the 1970s, Scott Barrett went on to become a four-time all Big Sky conference wrestler at Boise State University. By 1982, Barrett was the National Collegiate Athletic Association's runner-up in the 126-pound weight class, and two years later he was vying for Olympic gold. Barrett, who finished as a finals qualifier for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, parlayed his mat savvy to 13 years of successful coaching at both Elko High School (1985-93) and Spring Creek High School (1993-98). At the start of 1985, while coaching the Indian (Elko High) varsity team, Barrett introduced a freestyle wrestling program to the youngsters of Elko. By 1990 Barrett's program blossomed, with northern Nevada's youth as the beneficiaries. One particular youngster caught Barrett's attention back then.
