Nye satisfied, so far, with waste shipment methods

"It's not safe enough for California. It's not safe enough for Las Vegas. But it's safe enough for us. I'm still working on understanding that."

The "it" in question is the transportation of nuclear waste. The "I" was Dan Simmons, who filled in for Les Bradshaw as Nye County's representative at the Nevada Test Site Community Advisory Board meeting in Beatty Wednesday evening.

Despite his comments, though, Simmons said that the county was "moving in the right direction" in dealing with the nuclear waste shipments coming through Nye County, and was "looking out for the interests" of county residents. "We're doing everything we can to assure it's safe," he said. "If we felt it wasn't safe, we'd be doing a lot more."

Simmons and several other speakers commented that the perceived risk was greater than the actual risk, and, commenting on his own earlier comments about Las Vegas, Simmons said, "I wouldn't want to see this stuff rolling down Las Vegas Boulevard either. Th
